Nebraska Residency Requirements

  4. Nebraska Residency Requirements

Qualifying for residency for tuition purposes at the University of Nebraska differs from what is normally required to be considered a "resident" of the State of Nebraska. A person may be considered a "resident" of Nebraska and still be Non-Resident for Tuition purposes.

Nebraska Resident Classification

  • You graduated from a Nebraska high school physically located in the state.

Non-Resident Classification

  • You have not graduated from a Nebraska high school physically located in the state, or you are not a graduate of an accredited high school or an exempt school program in Nebraska.
  • You graduated with a GED (even if completed in Nebraska).
  • You have been enrolled at any Nebraska post-secondary institution full-time prior to the term or semester for which residency is sought.

What to Know About Non-Resident Classification

  • You will be considered a nonresident for tuition purposes for the duration of your attendance, assuming you remain continuously enrolled.
  • It is the student's responsibility to contest the initial residency decision and meet all appropriate deadlines if they feel the initial determination was wrong. The burden of proof lies solely with the student.
  • Mere physical presence in the State of Nebraska, regardless of length of stay, is not adequate to prove residency for tuition purposes. Likewise, owning property in the state will not result in automatic residency approval.

How to Become Classified as a Nebraska Resident

  • Complete and submit an Application For Residency Classification.
  • Submit the form with all required documentation prior to the term deadline.
    • Residency can only be approved for a future or current term prior to that term's deadline. Applications cannot be back dated for past terms.
