Biography

Heather Leas is a Grants Coordinator II at the University of Nebraska at Omaha with diverse experience across the research administration lifecycle. She began in post-award grant management for the Teacher-Researcher Partnership Program (TRPP) in 2015. Then, in late 2018, she became an inaugural member of the STEM Teaching-Research and Inquiry-based Learning (TRAIL) Center, where she managed budgets and facilitated project activities and events for a host of funded projects. Her interests in the broader research landscape led her to the UNO Office of Sponsored Programs in the Fall of 2021, where she has been ever since. She enjoys staying informed on a variety of federal and non-federal funding mechanisms and sharing her knowledge with grant seekers to make the external funding process less intimidating, more positive, and ultimately, more fruitful for all.

Heather directs efforts in the pre-award phase of the sponsored project lifecycle, specializing in supporting faculty and researchers through the development and submission of grant proposals. As a key liaison between the sponsor, university, and project teams, she ensures that proposals are compliant with sponsor guidelines, university policies, government regulations, and state laws. She also provides guidance on budget creation, interprets sponsor guidelines, and coordinates timelines from the initial intent to submit through the final submission, ensuring that all required institutional forms and documentation are completed accurately and on time.

Additionally, she supports non-financial aspects of grant management, such as reviewing and facilitating sponsor changes to awards, managing cost-sharing requirements, and assisting with budget reallocations, no-cost extensions, project director changes, award transfers, and carryover requests.
