Advising is a critical component of student success, but it can be time-intensive for both students and staff. At the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO), innovative projects are using artificial intelligence to streamline advising processes, improve accessibility, and provide personalized support. Here are three initiatives that illustrate how AI is transforming student advising at UNO.

Advising with AI for Music Programs

Project Lead: Adam Hilt

Scheduling courses in music programs can be challenging due to their rotational offerings. Adam Hilt’s project integrates AI into advising by aligning course schedules with students’ work and time constraints. This AI-powered system simplifies degree planning for music students and advisors, with the potential to expand to other departments across campus.

Probation Plan and UNO Informational GPT

Project Lead: Alyssa Askeland

For students on academic probation, Alyssa Askeland’s project offers personalized AI-generated study plans that help them regain good standing. These plans connect students with campus resources such as the Writing Center or DASH while tailoring strategies to their individual needs. By fostering academic success and improving re-enrollment rates, this initiative makes advising more impactful.

Emergency Management Program Advising Assistant

Project Lead: Minsoo Goo

Students in the Emergency Management program will soon have access to a custom chatbot trained to answer common advising questions. Minsoo Goo’s project ensures that students receive accurate and timely information about course requirements, internships, and training opportunities at any time without waiting or being restricted by office hours. This AI-driven solution makes advising and information more accessible while enhancing the student experience.

Revolutionizing Advising with AI

By automating routine tasks and providing tailored support, these projects demonstrate how AI can enhance the advising process at UNO. Whether simplifying course planning, supporting at-risk students, or answering program-specific questions, AI is making advising more efficient and accessible.
