The UNO Libraries support open access (OA) publishing at UNO through participation in agreements with scholarly publishers, which enable UNO authors to publish their articles OA in selected journals at no cost to themselves.

Update, October 27, 2022: The University of Nebraska's authors have used all of the Open Access Credits with Wiley. Authors will now receive a 10% discount on APCs with Wiley. Be sure to continue to indicate your institutional affiliation when submitting articles to ensure you receive the discount.

University of Nebraska at Omaha authors whose articles are accepted for publication in Wiley “hybrid” journals between February 1 and December 31, 2022, may be able to have their work published open access (OA) at no cost to themselves. Associated costs (known as Article Processing Charges, or APCs) for these publications will be covered by the libraries.

As affiliated campuses, University of Nebraska at Omaha, University of Nebraska at Kearney, and University of Nebraska Medical Center join UNL in participating with the Big Ten Academic Alliance (BTAA) libraries. The BTAA libraries have reached an agreement with Wiley for a one-year contract extension with an open access option, as a pilot in collective action toward BTAA’s Big Collection. This agreement begins on February 1, 2022, and runs through December 31, 2022. Over the course of 2022, BTAA will work toward a future agreement with Wiley.

Hybrid journals are journals that publish both open access and non-open access articles. Under the terms of the agreement between Wiley and the Big Ten Academic Alliance, a capped number of articles can be published OA in hybrid journals at no charge; once this threshold has been reached, authors will be offered a 10% discount on the APC. Charges for publication in Wiley’s fully open access (Gold OA) journals are not covered.

Corresponding authors affiliated with University of Nebraska-Lincoln, University of Nebraska at Omaha, University of Nebraska at Kearney, and University of Nebraska Medical Center are eligible for the APC credit. Authors should specify their institutional affiliation when submitting their articles, to ensure that the publisher’s editorial management system identifies them correctly for application of the credit.

After the article has been accepted for publication, authors will be presented with the choice of publishing OA or not. It is not possible to choose the OA option after the article has been published.

Beginning in 2021, UNO authors can also make use of open access publishing agreements with Cambridge University Press, PLoS Biology, and PLoS Medicine.
