The UNO Libraries support open access (OA) publishing at UNO through participation in the following agreements with scholarly publishers, which enable UNO authors to publish their articles OA in selected journals at no cost to themselves.

Cambridge University Press: “Read and Publish” Agreement

UNO authors whose articles are accepted for publication in most Cambridge University Press journals can choose to publish their work open access (OA) at no additional cost. The associated charges (known as article processing charges, or APCs) are covered by the UNO Libraries. Eligible article types include research articles, rapid communications, review articles, brief reports, and case reports with a UNO-affiliated corresponding author.

Authors should use their UNO email address and/or ORCID identifier when submitting their articles, to ensure that the publisher’s editorial management system identifies them correctly as eligible for the OA publication charge waiver. In the case of "hybrid" journals offering both OA and non-OA publication options, authors will be presented with the choice of publishing OA or not.

Authors processing their accepted articles in Cambridge UP’s system (“Rightslink”) should note that, while the system will indicate that the author needs to seek funding for the APC payment, this requirement will be waived for eligible authors as they work through the process. The UNO Libraries do not evaluate submissions for approval of funding, which is automatically granted. Cambridge UP requires all authors to complete the Rightslink transaction process, even if the APC is waived.

For information about the agreement, and a description of the steps involved for authors, see the Cambridge University Press information page for the Read and Publish agreement with the Big Ten Academic Alliance. For more information, contact unodigitalcommons@unomaha.edu.

PLoS Biology and PLoS Medicine: Participation in the PLoS Community Action Publishing (CAP) Program via the Big Ten Academic Alliance

University of Nebraska authors whose articles are accepted for publication in the Open Access journals PLoS Biology and PLoS Medicine after January 1, 2021, will not be required to pay an article processing charge (APC). Articles with a corresponding author affiliated with any of the University of Nebraska campuses, or a corresponding author from another PLOS Community Action Program-member institution, are eligible. If the corresponding author is not from the University of Nebraska or another member institution, but some of the coauthors are, the APC will be discounted.

Authors should be careful to indicate their institutional affiliation when submitting their articles to PLoS Biology and PLoS Medicine to ensure that the publisher’s editorial management system identifies them correctly as eligible for the OA publication charge waiver. For information about the agreement, and a description of the steps involved for authors, see the Community Action Publishing section of the PLoS website.
