Using Interlibrary Loan and Document Delivery

Looking for an item we don’t own? Interlibrary Loan (ILL) expands your borrowing power beyond the walls of Criss Library and allows you to obtain items from libraries all over the United States, including books, articles, DVDs, CDs, scores, and microfilm. This valuable service is offered to all current students, faculty, and staff of UNO.

Please keep in mind most libraries will not lend entire journal or magazine issues, archival materials, or newspapers in print format. eBooks are also not available to borrow via ILL. Popular fiction and recently published books/articles can be difficult to borrow. Some materials may be difficult to obtain due to rarity of the material, publisher embargoes, and/or lending restrictions determined by the lending library. Because textbooks are in high demand, we may be unable to fill ILL requests for them. There are a number of online sites where you can borrow textbooks for an entire semester for a small fee.

Requesting material that is owned by Criss Library is called Document Delivery (DocDel). Document Delivery requests are made the same way you make ILL requests. The ILL department will scan book chapters, journal articles, and other materials owned by Criss Library and upload them as PDFs to your ILLiad account. You can then download these to your personal computer.

Turnaround time depends on the material requested:

  • Physical ILL items can take on average 10-14 days to arrive, so please plan accordingly.
  • Articles/book chapters are delivered electronically in PDF format and usually arrive within a week, but typically take 1-3 business days.
  • Most Document Delivery requests will be filled within 1-2 business days.
  • Rare items may take 6-12 weeks to obtain.

Upon arrival:

  • You will be notified by email when your requested material is available.
  • Books and other physical materials are held for checkout at the Service Desk (2nd floor).
  • Article/book chapter PDFs will be delivered to your ILL (ILLiad) account.
  • Both ILL and Document Delivery articles will remain uploaded to your ILL account for 30 days.
    • It is recommended that you download & save these article PDFs to your personal computer as soon as possible.
      • After 30 days, articles will automatically delete and access to them will no longer be available.

Due Dates

Due dates for your loans can be found on the book strap or sticker attached to the front of your ILL item; or, by logging into your ILLiad account and clicking “Checked Out Items.” Please keep in mind due dates can vary, depending on where we borrowed the material from.

Returns

All ILL items should be returned directly to Criss Library’s Service Desk on the main (2nd) floor.

Renewals

Loan periods for items can differ widely. If a renewal is needed, it should be made prior to the due date. To renew an ILL item:

  • Log into your ILLiad account, and click on Checked Out Items
  • Click on the transaction number of the item you wish to renew and click Renew Request.

The new due date you receive is tentative, pending approval of the lending library. Once we hear from the lending library, we will let you know the new due date via email.

You are only allowed to renew an item from your account once and it must be prior to the due date. For additional renewals or renewal assistance, please email ILL staff at unoill@unomaha.edu and we'll gladly try to get your items renewed for you. Be sure to include the TN (Transaction Number) and title. Keep in mind, many libraries do not allow multiple renewals.

Recalls

Lending libraries reserve the right to “recall” or ask that their book be returned at any time. Should your item be recalled, you will be notified by email that the

book has been recalled and must be returned to the lender immediately. ILL staff will also ask if you still need the book as they will be happy to try and get another copy for you from a different library.

Overdue Items

You will receive overdue notification emails if your ILL items are not returned by the due date. Failure to return your Interlibrary Loans will result in the blocking of your ILLiad account, loss of library privileges, and the assessment of overdue charges and/or item replacement costs to your library account.

Avoid the hassle! If your ILL item becomes overdue and you are still using it, please contact ILL staff at unoill@unomaha.edu as soon as possible. We will work with the lender to try to renew your item, or we will resubmit your request to obtain another copy for you from a different library.

Costs

We make every effort to obtain ILL materials at no cost to you, but sometimes other libraries charge for items. Fees range from $5 to $100; most fall between $15 to $20. If the material is only available from a library that charges a fee, we will notify you by email, giving you the opportunity to cancel your request without being charged.

Faculty have a $200 per semester limit for ILL materials incurring fees. Faculty will be notified when the limit is reached and given the opportunity to pay for requests from departmental funds or personal accounts.
