UNO's Eta Beta Chapter of Alpha Sigma Lambda Honor Society, sponsored by the Division of Continuing Studies, welcomed 84 new members at a ceremony and reception on November 30. This annual event, a tradition since 1990, honors students in the Bachelor of Multidisciplinary Studies (BMS) program who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement.

The ceremony was a recognition of academic excellence, but more importantly, highlighted stories of dedication and perseverance. It spotlighted the unique journeys of students defying conventional norms. Among them was Kyle Ferris, set to graduate later this month. A married, soon-to-be-father with a career at Duncan Aviation in non-destructive testing, Kyle pursued the BMS degree to enhance his career.

Kyle's academic journey began in the College of Business, where his advisor recommended the BMS program knowing that the program could best maximize his transfer credits. This change significantly reduced his remaining required credits for graduation from 78 to 36. Kyle attributes his ability to complete the BMS program in two years to the generous acceptance and application of his community college credits. At the ceremony, Kyle expressed his gratitude for the unwavering support of his academic advisor, Katie Sup Rezac, stating, "She was always there to answer any question I had." He also acknowledged his wife, Cayci, who is pursuing her master’s in social work at UNO, for her support and encouragement.

Betelhem Adege, who is graduating in May with concentrations in general administration and women's and gender studies, found a home at UNO and praises the university's reputation, diverse degree options, and inclusive atmosphere. She credits her academic advisor, Nellie Beyan-Olabige, for her crucial role in guiding Betelhem through her academic journey.

UNO feels like you are home."

"UNO feels like you are home," expressed Adege, capturing the essence of the university's welcoming environment. A surprising favorite for Betelhem was an aviation class that disabused her assumption that aviation courses were only about airplanes. "I learned about transportation and communication. I found the industry fascinating and am planning on taking another aviation class," she shared, highlighting the diverse learning opportunities allowable within the BMS program.

An IT professional from Hastings, Nebraska, John Wischmeier, represents the growing population of online learners able to attend UNO regardless of geographic location or circumstance. Despite physical distance, he has been determined to be an active part of the UNO community.

John credited his academic advisor with fostering a sense of community among online learners, stating, "Kate built an online student center where we can all chat and exchange information. It has been a great way for me to participate and feel like I am a part of UNO." After earning his BMS degree, John plans to continue his educational journey toward a graduate degree in cybersecurity.

We applaud the academic excellence demonstrated by the 84 new members inducted to the Alpha Sigma Lambda Honor Society and, more importantly, their diverse and inspiring stories that defines UNO's diverse, multigenerational student community. Congratulations to the triumph of perseverance, dedication, and the indomitable spirit of UNO's scholars.
