Bachelor of Science in Aviation-Professional Flight

The Bachelor of Science in Aviation with a concentration in Professional Flight is designed for students interested in becoming professional pilots. Courses include a comprehensive general education program, aviation department requirements, aviation core classes, and flight training from the Private Pilot's Certificate to Certified Flight Instructor and Multi-Engine Ratings. UNO is also pleased to be able to offer students a full Restricted ATP program.


The Professional Flight concentration is certified by the FAA as a Part 141 program. The degree program is also approved by the FAA as a Restricted Airline Transport Pilot program, which allows students who successfully complete the degree as well as all required FAA ratings and certificates to meet the ATP flight experience requirements with 1,000 hours rather than the standard 1,500 hours. Students must complete the Private Pilot Certificate, Commercial Pilot Certificate, and Certified Flight Instructor Certificate, as well as the Instrument and Multi-Engine Ratings.

Understanding the meaning, value, and history of human existence is an essential skill for living in contemporary society. One must have an understanding and appreciation of the various forms of humanistic/artistic expression and the role these artifacts play across various cultures. Students must complete 9 credit hours of coursework representing at least two different disciplines in this category. Students may choose from a list of University of Nebraska-Omaha approved courses which can be found at http://gened.unomaha.edu/approvedcourses.php

Social Sciences (9 credits)

The goal of the social sciences is to help students understand the social dynamics that make up the world particularly the relationships between individuals, groups, societies and social institutions. Students must complete 9 credit hours of coursework representing at least two different disciplines in this category. Students may choose from a list of University of Nebraska-Omaha approved courses which can be found at http://gened.unomaha.edu/approvedcourses.php

Natural and Physical Sciences (7 credits)

Understanding the nature of scientific inquiry and the operation of the natural, physical, and technological world is essential for making personal and public policy decisions. Students must complete 7 credit hours of coursework representing at least two different disciplines in this category with at least one laboratory course. Students may choose from a list of University of Nebraska-Omaha approved courses which can be found at http://gened.unomaha.edu/approvedcourses.php

Diversity (6 credit hours)

Diversity-Global (3 credit hours)

Courses in this category focus on the significant cultural, economic, geographical, historical, political, and/or sociological aspects of one or more counties or nations other than or in comparison to the United States. Students must complete 3 credit hours of coursework in this category. Students may choose from a list of University of Nebraska-Omaha approved courses which can be found at http://gened.unomaha.edu/approvedcourses.php

Diversity-United States (3 credit hours)

This requirement develops students’ awareness of the history, society, and/or culture of one or more underrepresented groups in the United States. Students must complete 3 credit hours of coursework in this category. Students may choose from a list of University of Nebraska-Omaha approved courses which can be found at http://gened.unomaha.edu/approvedcourses.php.

Department Requirements (22 credit hours)

AVN 3060 Writing in Aviation 3 credits

This course will further develop the communication skills of aviation students through various forms of writing. Students will compose a research paper and other writing assignments. Prereq: ENGL 1160/1164 and AVN 1000, must be completed with a “C-“ or better in the course. (Fall semester)

AVN 2510 Diversity in Aviation 3 credits

This course provides an overview of the contributions women and minorities have made to the field of aviation. Emphasis is placed on past, present and future roles of women and minorities in aviation. The course includes other topics such as international aspects and issues of aviation.

AVN 3600 International Aviation 3 credits

This course examines global air transport and its impact on the development of the global economy. Lectures and readings will provide a solid foundation of historical knowledge about international air transport and its development in various countries, before exploring current policy debates about liberalization, global alliances, and other critical issues. Prereq: AVN 2020

ECON 2200 Principles of Economics* (Micro) 3 credits

An introduction to economic principles, decision making and policies affecting product and resource markets. Particular emphasis is on price, output and input decisions by individuals and firms under various market conditions. An introduction to the fundamentals of international trade. Prereq: ENGL 1150/1154 and MATH 1220 with a “C” or better.

PA 3000 Applied Statistics and Data Management in Public Sector 3 credits

A course in the basic statistics of public sector research and public administration decision-making. The emphasis is on exploration of data processing techniques as they relate to statistical analysis and on understanding the proper application of statistics. Prereq: Math 1220 with a C- or better.

PHYS 1050 Introduction to Physics* 4 credits

A terminal one semester course covering major topics in mechanics, heat, sound, electricity, magnetism, light and modern physics. Designed particularly for non-science liberal arts majors or others for whom such a one semester coverage might be deemed adequate.

PSCI 1100 Introduction to American National Government * 3 credits

An introduction to the foundational principles, organization, major institutions and functioning of American national government.

* course meets a UNO general education requirement as well as an AI Departmental requirement.

Aviation Major (24 credit hours)

AVN 1000 Introduction to Aviation and Aerospace* 3 credits

This course provides a broad understanding of all aspects of the air transportation and aerospace industries. Lectures will cover what has happened in the industry to date, with emphasis on present and future developments in air transportation. The course will include the impact the airline industry is making on airports and other segments of aviation and aerospace. Must be completed with a C- or better. (Offered Fall/Spring semesters)

AVN 1020 Private Pilot Theory 3 credits

This course will familiarize the student with theories associated with flight. These include aerodynamics, weather, FAA regulations, navigation, airports, airspace and aviation safety. Must be completed with a C- or better. (Offered Fall/Spring semesters)

AVN 1040 History of Aviation and Aerospace* 3 credits

Purpose of this course is to present the historical antecedents leading to the conquest of the air and the evolution of aviation and aerospace progress to present day. Must be completed with a C- or better. (Offered Fall/Spring semester)

AVN 1160 Aviation Safety 3 credits

This course provides the student with a detailed introduction to aspects of aviation safety as well as the associated components of flight human factors, aircraft technology, weather related accidents and accident investigation. Prereq: AVN 1000, course must be completed with a C- or better. (Offered Fall/Spring semester)

AVN 2020 Airline Operations 3 credits

The purpose of this course is to introduce the student to operational aspects of airline management. Topics to be covered include management, leadership, labor relations, marketing, forecasting, and fleet planning Prereq: AVN 1000, course must be completed with a C- or better. (Offered Fall/Spring semester)

AVN 2050 Introduction to Airport Administration 3 credits

This course examines airport operations, safety and security, various administrative roles within the airport community, and the impact airports can have on local and regional economies. Students will explore the unique role public airports plan as interface between the traveling public and private airlines. Prereq: AVN 1000, course must be completed with a C- or better. (Offered Fall/Spring semester)

AVN 2750 Aviation Meteorology 3 credits

An introductory study of the key elements of the atmosphere’s structure from the earth’s surface to the upper levels; weather systems and hazards to aviation operation plus impact of adverse weather on aeronautical operations. Course will include review of air mass characteristics, frontal weather, and pressure system structure. Prereq: AVN 1020 and MATH 1220 or equivalent, course must be completed with a C- or better. (Offered Fall/Spring semester)

AVN 3150 Aviation Law 3 credits

The purpose of this course is to increase the student’s knowledge of aviation law and regulations. Particular attention will focus on the American legal system; important legal concepts, regulators of the industry and international aviation law. Case studies will be discussed throughout the course. Prereq: AVN 1000 and junior standing, course must be completed with a C- or better. (Offered Spring semester)

Professional Flight Specialization (43 credit hours)

AVN 1024 Private Pilot Flight Laboratory 1 credit

This laboratory course is designed for students pursuing flight requirements for the FAA private pilot certificate. The student will complete all flight requirements for solo flight. Course will include flight in aircraft simulators and single –engine aircraft. Class is conducted off campus. Special fees apply. Prereq: Completion of or concurrent enrollment in AVN 1020, or successful completion of the FAA Private Knowledge Test, course must be completed with a C- or better. (Offered each semester)

AVN 1030 Private Pilot Flight Certificate 2 credits

This course will prepare the student for the FAA practical flight examination for the private pilot certificate. Course involves flight in personal computer assisted training device and single-engine aircraft. Student is required to successfully complete all FAA certification requirements and obtain a private pilot certificate. Classes will be conducted off campus. Special fees apply. Prereq: AVN 1020 and 1024, course must be completed with a C- or better. (Offered each semester)

AVN 2170 Instrument Flight Theory 3 credits

This course provides the student with an understanding of the theories and regulations involved in instrument flight. Course will include a strong foundation in attitude instrument flying and instrument navigation to prepare the student for the FAA Instrument Rating Knowledge Test. There is no flight training involved in this course. Special fees apply. Prereq: AVN 1030 or hold a valid U.S. Private Pilot Certificate or instructor permission, course must be completed with a C- or better. (Offered Fall/Spring semesters)

AVN 2104 Instrument Rating I 2 credits

The student will complete approximately 25 hours of training in a single-engine aircraft at a UNO approved Fixed Base Operator and FAA approved Advanced Aviation Training Device on the UNO Main Campus; objective is to complete the first portion of training needed for the FAA Instrument Rating. Special fees, FAA medical examination and TSA Clearance required. Prereq: AVN 2170 or instructor permission, AVN 2170 can be taken concurrently, course must be completed with a C- or better. Not open to non-degree students. (Offered each semester)

AVN 2114 Instrument Rating II 1 credit

The student will complete approximately 20 hours of training in a single-engine aircraft at a UNO approved Fixed Base Operator; objective is to complete the final portion of training needed for the FAA Instrument Rating. Special Fees, FAA medical examination and TSA clearance required. Prereq: AVN 2104 (AC 61-139 Area 1)

AVN 2180 Commercial Pilot Theory 3 credits

This course provides the student with an understanding of the theories involved in flight at the commercial level. Course will include extensive review and study of VFR and IFR cross-country procedures and night flight procedures to prepare the student for the FAA commercial Pilot Knowledge Test. There is no flight training involved in the course. Special fees apply. Prereq: AVN 2104 or possess a U.S. FAA issued Private Pilot Certificate or instructor permission. Strongly recommended that student possess a U.S. instrument rating, course must be completed with a C- or better. (Offered Fall/Spring semester)

AVN 2124 Commercial Certificate I 2 credits

The student will complete approximately 40 hours of training in a single-engine aircraft at a UNO-approved Fixed Base Operator and FAA-approved Advanced Aviation Training Device on the UNO Main Campus; objective is to complete the first of three sections of training needed for the FAA Commercial Pilot Certificate. Special Fees, FAA Medical examination and TSA clearance required. Prereq: AVN 2114 and concurrent enrollment in 2180; or instructor permission, course must be completed with a C- or better. (Offered each semester) AC 61-139 Area 1

AVN 2134 Commercial Certificate II 2 credits

The student will complete approximately 40 hours of training in a single-engine aircraft at a UNO-approved Fixed Base Operator and FAA-approved Advanced Aviation Training Device on the UNO Main Campus; objective is to complete the second of three sections of training needed for the FAA Commercial Pilot Certificate. Special Fees, FAA Medical examination and TSA clearance required. Prereq: AVN 2124 or instructor permission, course must be completed with a C- or better. (Offered each semester) AC 61-139 Area 1

AVN 2144 Commercial Certificate III 2 credits

The student will complete approximately 40 hours of training in a single-engine aircraft at a UNO-approved Fixed Base Operator and FAA-approved Advanced Aviation Training Device on the UNO Main Campus; objective is to complete the final third section of training needed for the FAA Commercial Pilot Certificate. Special Fees, FAA Medical examination and TSA clearance required. Prereq: AVN 2134 or instructor permission, course must be completed with a C- or better. (Offered each semester) AC 61-139 Area 1

AVN 3040 Human Factors in Aviation Safety 3 credits

The purpose of this course is to provide students with an understanding of human factors as it applies to pilots and administrators. Topics will include pilot physiological and psychological issues, work station design, crew resource management, and related public sector issues for managers. Prereq: AVN 1160, must be completed with a C- or better. (Offered fall/spring semester)

AVN 3070 Air Traffic Control 3 credits

The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Air Traffic Control system. Elements and requirements of the course include: basic air traffic control procedures for pilots, navigation aids, control tower operations, radar, approach and departure regulations, and airport traffic control (ATC). Offered Spring semester.

AVN 3190 Certified Flight Instructor Theory 3 credits

Provide the student with an understanding of the theories involved in flight instruction. Course will include extensive oral presentation of complex aeronautical information and use of the personal computer assisted training device. Students are expected to pass the FAA Fundamentals of Instructing and FAA Flight Ground Instructor Knowledge tests. Prereq: AVN 2144 and SPCH 1110, a C- or better is required for the course. (Offered Spring semester)

AVN 3194 Certified Flight Instructor I 2 credits

This course consists of approximately 25 hours of flight training in flight instruction procedures required to obtain the FAA flight instructor certificate. Special Fees Apply. Prereq: AVN 3190 or concurrent enrollment, a C- or better is required for the course. (Offered every semester)

AVN 3400 Multi Engine Certification 2 credits

Couse consists of ground and fight training in a multi-engine aircraft. Students will meet all flight requirements for the FAA multi-engine rating. Special fees required, must have a C- or better in the course. Prereq: AVN 2144 or concurrent enrollment.

AVN 4010 Aerodynamics and Aircraft Performance 3 credits

Provides the student with an understanding of the factors affecting aircraft performance during various phases of flight. Topics will include aircraft performance requirements outlined in the Federal Aviation Administration Regulations, use of performance charts and tables, runway airport analysis, and climb cruise descent performance. Students must have a C- or better. Prereq: AVN 1000, AVN 2144, Math 1220 (Offered Fall Semester)

AVN 4020 Aircraft Systems 3 credits

Provides the student with an understanding of systems employed on technologically advanced, sophisticated aircraft. Systems covered will include electrical, hydraulic, engines, flight control and pneumatic systems. Prereq: AVN 1000, 2144 or instructor permission, course must be completed with a C- or better. (Offered Fall semester)

AVN 4060 Advanced Air Transport Flight Operations 3 credits

The course will be a capstone event in the professional pilot sequence. Specific emphasis will be on the pre-flight planning and execution of air carrier flight operations. Additional instructional segments will cover regional and corporate flight operations. Prereq: AVN 4020 or instructor permission, a C- or better is required in the course. (Offered Spring semester)

AVN 4080 Airport Safety and Security 3 credits

This course will explore the role of airports in relation to safety and security. Topics will include regulations, responsibilities, security, issues, ramp safety, disaster preparedness, and emergency management. Students must receive a C- or better in the course. Prereq: Junior standing, AVN 1000.

Open Electives (As needed)

Students will fill their open electives as needed with courses selected from a variety of disciplines within the University of Nebraska at Omaha. Each student’s open elective hours will vary. They fill as needed to reach 120 credit hours.
