A 10 hour group experience (5 weeks/2 hr sessions) is required of all students prior to enrollment in the group courses (COUN 8270/8370).

The group experience is scheduled through the department and facilitated by licensed mental health professionals selected by the department. No academic credit is provided for the group experience.

It is designed as an opportunity for students to engage in self-growth while experiencing firsthand the unique relational and process dynamics of group counseling. Students must complete all five (5) two-hour group sessions with the same group.

The process for completing the group experience is as follows:

  • Students will be notified of the group experience schedules through the Counseling Department’s listserv, departmental postings, and postings in The Communicator newsletter.
  • A sign-up sheet will be located with the department’s secretary. A seat in the group will be provided when the student signs up and provides payment. Group space is provided on a first-come first-served basis. Students who do not reside in the Omaha metro area should notify the department chair in advance of the semester they would like to attend the group experience.
  • At the completion of the group experience, students must complete and turn in the anonymous Group Experience Evaluation to the department secretary. This evaluation is an important part of the department’s overall assessment plan. The document is found on the forms and documents web page.
