Required Coursework for Ph.D.

Credit from Masters (30-45 hrs); 4 field-related courses; 1 other (ROTT); Dissertations hours

MA Thesis hours credits (max 45)
You must be enrolled every semester (for at least 1 credit) after you file for candidacy

Dissertation hours (max 30)
You must be enrolled every semester (for at least 1 credit) after you file for candidacy

Program of Study

Appointment of Doctoral Supervisory Committee
Committees typically are formed after the completion of 45 hours (includes hours taken in that semester the form is filed- usually the Spring or Summer of 3rd year)

Doctoral Plan of Study Form
Usually submitted the same semester that the Ph.D. committee is formed

Dissertation Comprehensive Exam & Candidacy
Students earnings a MA at UNO, this would be the end of your 4th year or beginning of 5th; Students arriving with a master's earned elsewhere, this would be by the end of your 3rd year

A form must be filed indicating that the student is eligible for candidacy. This form must be filed at least 7 months before your dissertation oral defense. You must be enrolled every semester (for at least 1 credit) after you file for candidacy.

Comprehensive Exam
Oral exam and independent product from student showing comprehensive knowledge of their field and independence as a researcher.
