Community Chair in Human Rights
Promoting Faculty, Student, and Community Engagement with Human Rights
The Goldstein Family Community Chair in Human Rights was established in 2017 through the generosity of Shirley and Leonard Goldstein's children: Don Goldstein, Kathy Goldstein-Helm, and Gail Raznick. It brings energy and expertise to coordinate and expand a broad range of human rights initiatives at UNO. The holder of the community chair supports and enhances the work of the GCHR by serving on the executive committee and one of the three standing committees, as well as partnering on events and initiatives.
The second holder of the Goldstein Faily Community Chair is Dr. Ramazan Kılınç, Professor of Political Science. He teaches courses on human rights, religion, and politics in the Middle East. He is the author of Alien Citizens: State and Religious Minorities in Turkey and France (Cambridge University Press, 2020). With Carolyn Warner, Christopher Hale and Adam Cohen, he is a co-author of Generating Generosity in Catholicism and Islam: Beliefs, Institutions and Public Goods Provision (Cambridge University Press, 2018). He edits a blog page, Siyasa: A Forum on Islamic and Middle Eastern Politics. His most recent articles appeared in Comparative Politics, Political Science Quarterly, Politics and Religion, Studies in Conflict and Terrorism, and Turkish Studies. He is the recipient of the 2021 system-wide University of Nebraska Outstanding Teaching and Instructional Creativity Award, the 2022 campus-wide Faculty Service Learning Award, the 2020 campus-wide Excellence in Teaching Award, the 2021 college-wide Research and Creative Activity Award, and the 2018 college-wide Alumni Outstanding Teacher Award.
