Since graduating with her Master’s in English from UNO in 2016, Alisha Limoges has forged a dynamic path in public service, working to better lives in communities across the globe.
While fulfilling her MA, Limoges worked as a teaching assistant for composition courses within the English department. This is where she was introduced to College Possible, a national nonprofit that emphasizes and aids in the accessibility and success of lower-income students. She noted, “I realized that education was only one vehicle out of generational poverty, and I wanted to have a bigger impact on more residents.” Motivated by this realization, and drawing on her background in political science, she later found her way to Results for America. “RFA works with local, state, and federal government leaders to harness the power of data and evidence to fund solutions that work to accelerate economic mobility and improve lives,” she explained.
At Results for America, no two days are the same for Limoges, whether discussing policy with municipal leaders, presenting on the ethical use of AI in local government, or helping implement data-driven solutions. She credits her English degree for supporting her work, stating, “Effective communication—both written and verbal—is essential in my role, particularly in working with municipalities. The ability to convey information clearly and concisely is a skill I developed and continue to rely on daily.”
This field has undeniably fulfilled a gap in Limoges’s professional journey while benefiting the numerous communities she impacts. When asked what advice she would give to students aiming for a similar career path in service or policy-related work, she suggested, “Whatever your passion is, find an organization that is willing to nurture your professional growth and extend grace when life happens.” She added, “Find something that can sustain your soul as much as it can sustain the life you want to live.”
