With more than twenty years of dedication to her role at UNO, Jill Sutton has been honored as Employee of the Year—a prestigious recognition celebrating her warmth, dedication, and impact within the English department.
Although her journey at UNO began in the parking division in 2004, Sutton transitioned to the English department, where she has remained for over 15 years. Her can-do attitude has served her well, earning her the title of Employee of the Month last May, supported by several peer recommendations. She credits her sunny demeanor and desire to help others for this latest honor. “I strive to make others feel heard and supported, which helps create an environment where positivity thrives,” she says. “I’ve found that when people feel motivated and valued, it makes a huge difference in the overall atmosphere of the workplace.”
Sutton continues to find lighthearted ways to welcome visitors and staff into the office, creating an environment that is both lively and hardworking. She believes the secret to camaraderie lies in the details—decorating for holidays, taking group photos, and even organizing friendly competitions are always on the table. Through these efforts, she has fostered countless memories, smiles, and “lasting friendships that continue even after graduation and retirement.”
While Sutton is rightfully celebrated, she attributes this award to her colleagues and their continued efforts toward making the English department special. “For me, it’s not just about the recognition—it’s about celebrating the collective efforts that led to this achievement.” Jill Sutton continues to strive for greatness and remains an incredible addition to our university.
