Getting Into the Right Math Course

Math is one of several disciplines that requires placement into a course to ensure that you're in the course that's right for you.

Math Placement Information

Before you can register for a math course at UNO, you'll need to have math placement. Your placement is based on test scores that you've earned on math tests you've taken, whether that test is the ACT, SAT or the Accuplacer exam. You can check the table below to see the math placement that correlates with your score.

  • Any student may challenge their ACT/SAT placement by taking the Accuplacer exam.

  • Accuplacer Exam can only be taken twice in 2 years
  • Math Placement scores from UNL or other institutions cannot be used.

Math Requirements at UNO

UNO has five (5) math courses that satisfy the University Quantitative Literacy requirement for general education:

  • MATH 1120 - Mathematical & Computational Thinking
  • MATH 1130 - Quantitative Literacy
  • MATH 1220 - College Algebra
  • STAT 1100 - Data Literacy
  • STAT 1530 - Intro to Probability & Statistics

Please visit the University Quantitative Literacy Options webpage to learn more about the Quantitative Literacy requirement and what math course above you should take based on the major or program you are pursuing.

If you are a transfer student and have questions about transfer course equivalencies in Math or Statistics, contact your academic advisor or the Math Department Academic Coordinator.

Other information about General Education & Math:

  • The Math Placement Exam (Accuplacer) placement into MATH 1320 or higher does NOT equal proficiency of MATH 1120, 1130, 1220, or STAT 1100 or 1530. You will still need to take a Math course to meet the University's requirement.
  • Many majors will require additional Math courses. Talk to an academic advisor in your major to determine your Math requirements. You can also find more information on the "Which classes require MATH 1220?" webpage to see if certain classes in your major will require MATH 1220.
  • MATH 1120 and 1130 and STAT 1100 cannot be used as a prerequisite for higher level mathematics courses; however, MATH 1120 is an acceptable prerequisite for STAT 1530, MTCH 2000, SOC 2130, CRCJ 3000, and PSYC 3130.
