The College of Arts and Sciences provides scholarship assistance to prospective and current students based on merit or need.

Arts and Sciences Scholarships

UNO College of Arts & Sciences Returning Student Scholarship
Description:

This scholarship supports students returning to the College of Arts and Sciences to continue a CAS degree-granting major after a period of non-enrollment in any institution of higher education.

Criteria: To qualify, applicants must:
  • not have been enrolled in any institution of higher education (including UNO) for at least 12 consecutive months prior to Fall 2025
  • re-enroll for the Fall 2025 term in a degree-granting major within the College of Arts and Sciences
Note: Students do not need to qualify for financial aid, nor have a current FAFSA on file to apply. There is no minimum GPA requirement.
Amount: Up to $1,500

UNO College of Arts & Sciences Completion Scholarships: Cross the Finish Line Scholarship, Gordan & Ann Moshman Scholarship, and Mildred Taylor Meyer Completion Scholarship
Description:

The Cross the Finish Line, Gordon & Ann Moshman, and Mildred Taylor Meyer Completion Scholarships assist current Arts and Sciences degree-seeking students of any major who, due to unexpected or exceptional circumstances, need additional financial support to complete their final graduation requirements.

Criteria:

Minimum criteria:

  • Pursuing first bachelor's degree
  • Current undergraduate major in the College of Arts & Sciences
  • At least 75 credits earned prior to the semester(s) in which scholarship awards would be applied
  • Cumulative G.P.A. of at least 2.75

*Preference may be given to students who have completed more than 90 credit hours and/or an expected graduation date of August 2026 or sooner, with a history of few withdrawals and grades lower than C- on their transcript. Additional factors that may be considered when reviewing applications include any of the following: demonstrated success in two or more full-time semesters at UNO; first generation status; parent of a minor child and/or children.

Students are not required to have a current FAFSA on file, and students ineligible for financial aid can still qualify for these scholarships. A strong case for financial awards can be supported with demonstrated financial need through a student's current FAFSA on file.

Amount:

Up to $3,500

Recipients may receive other scholarships, but the total awarded (not counting need-based aid) cannot exceed tuition, fees, and books. Funds are limited and not all applicants will receive an award.

  • Spring 2026 Deadline: Sunday, November 30, 2025

John and Arinda Adams Talent Scholarship
Description: This scholarship is awarded to undergraduate students pursuing any major in the College of Arts & Sciences.
Criteria: Applicants must be incoming freshmen.
Amount: Usually $1,000

Dr. Terence E. Hayes College of Arts and Sciences Scholarship
Description8 This scholarship is awarded to part-time or full-time undergraduate students pursuing any major in the College of Arts & Sciences.
Criteria:

Applicants must have completed more than 15 hours and have a cumulative G.P.A. of at least 3.0. Candidates with less than a 3.0 G.P.A. may be considered with other evidence of merit, such as a letter of recommendation from a faculty member or an employer. Preference may be given to those with demonstrated financial need and enrolled in six or more hours.

Amount: Usually $800

Natan and Hannah Schwalb Arts and Sciences Scholarship (First-Year Student)
Description: This scholarship is awarded to undergraduate students pursuing any major in the College of Arts & Sciences.
Criteria:

Applicants must be incoming freshmen in the top ten percent of their high school class and have demonstrated financial need. Preference may be given to those who have participated in extracurricular activities.

Amount:

Usually $1,000

Natan and Hannah Schwalb Arts and Sciences Scholarship (Upperclassmen)
Description: This scholarship is awarded to undergraduate students pursuing any major in the College of Arts & Sciences.
Criteria:

Applicants must have a cumulative G.P.A. of at least 3.2 and have demonstrated financial need. Preference may be given to those who have participated in extracurricular activities.

Dr. Barbara Hayhome Memorial Undergraduate Scholarship
Description: This scholarship is awarded to students in good academic standing as biology majors, molecular & biomedical biology majors, or environmental studies majors (life science option). More than one may be awarded each year.

David Chesneau Memorial Scholarship
Description: This scholarship is awarded to students in good academic standing as biology majors, molecular & biomedical biology majors, or environmental studies majors (life science option). More than one may be awarded each year.

Dr. Merle E. Brooks Academic Achievement Award in Biology and/or Science Education
Description: This scholarship is awarded to an undergraduate (junior or senior) or graduate student majoring in a degree program in the Department of Biology or in Biology Education in the Department of Teacher Education in the College of Education at UNO.
Criteria: Candidates desire to pursue a career in the area of plant sciences, limnology (aquatic ecology) and/or teaching biological sciences at the high school level following graduation from UNO.

Bertrand and Marian Othmer Schultz Collegiate Scholarship
Description: This scholarship is offered through the Nebraska Academy of Sciences.
Criteria: Applicants must be a junior or senior pursuing a major in the Natural Sciences.
Amount: $3,000

INBRE Scholarship & Biomedical Research Experience
Description: A scholarship and research experience offered to selected undergraduates interested in pursuing further education in biomedical research.
Criteria:

C. R. Keppel Fund for Undergraduate Research in Chemistry
Description: This scholarship supports undergraduate research, including tuition scholarship, and travel funds.
Criteria: Applicants must be a junior or senior pursuing a major in the Natural Sciences, and currently or previously enrolled in Chem 4960.

Dr. and Mrs. Tim D. Leon Scholarship Fund Given in Memory of Nell Ward
Description: This scholarship supports undergraduate research, including tuition scholarship, and travel funds.
Criteria:

Provides a $1,200 scholarship for regularly enrolled Chemistry majors, with preference given to students from these high schools:

  • Riverton H.S., Riverton NE
  • Franklin Co., NE high schools
  • Holdrege H.S., Holdrege NE
  • Phelps Co., NE high schools
  • Any NE high school provided there are no eligible students from schools above
Amount: Approximately $1,200

Dr. Nell Ward Memorial Scholarship
Description: This scholarship supports undergraduate research, including tuition scholarship, and travel funds.
Criteria:

Must be full-time Chemistry majors, making progress to degree; GPA ≥ 2.8; completed two full Chemistry lecture and labs at UNO; taking courses on UNO campus.

Amount: $1,300

James K. and Kathleen H. Wood Scholarship in Chemistry
Description: This scholarship supports undergraduate research, including tuition scholarship, and travel funds.
Criteria:

Junior and senior level chemistry students who complete Organic Chemistry I & II at UNO, with a GPA ≥ 3.0 in those courses.

Amount: $750

Walter W. and Mittie W. Linstromberg Scholarship in Chemistry
Description: This scholarship supports undergraduate research, including tuition scholarship, and travel funds.
Criteria:

Scholarship to regularly enrolled, full-time (sophomore & above) Chemistry majors with an overall GPA ≥ 3.0, and Chemistry GPA ≥ 3.0.

Amount: $1,800

William and Margaret March Endowed Student Scholarship in Memory of Nell Ward
Description: This scholarship supports undergraduate research, including tuition scholarship, and travel funds.
Criteria:

Scholarship to support enrolled sophomore and above Chemistry majors with an overall GPA ≥ 3.0. Preference to candidates with demonstrated financial need and if employed and using own resources to pay for college.

Amount: $1,200

Lillian and William Campen Memorial Scholarship
Description: This scholarship supports undergraduate research, including tuition scholarship, and travel funds.
Criteria:

Scholarship to support regularly enrolled Chemistry majors with ACT ≥ 26 or equivalent SAT score. Preference to candidates with demonstrated financial need.

Amount: $1,000
Dr. Fred W. Upson Grant-in-Aid
Description: Supports a UNO student majoring in or doing research in the field of chemistry.
Criteria:

Student must have been a Nebraska resident for not less than 10 years and display academic achievement, involvement, leadership, statement of career goals, and financial need.

Amount: $2,400 (payable in 10 equal installments during the academic year)

Gilbert M. Hitchcock Memorial Scholarship
Description: Supports a UNO student majoring in or doing research in the field of chemistry.
Criteria:

Chemistry major, usually awarded to senior level student.

Amount: $600

Harry Jerome Talent Scholarship
Description: Provides support for entering UNO Chemistry or Medicinal Chemistry majors.
Criteria:

Student should be unconditionally accepted to UNO, enrolled for ≥ 6 credit hours, have exceptional talent in a specific area while above average elsewhere academically, and perform research or extracurricular activity in science. Total merit-based package cannot exceed cost of tuition and fees.

Dr. Susan Naramore Maher Scholarship for Best Undergraduate Research Essay
Description: This is a scholarship for an English major, minor, or TESOL Certificate-in-Course for the academic year. One student will be selected for this award for their outstanding research and writing.
Criteria:

Applicants must be enrolled as an English major or minor, or TESOL Certificate-in-Course. Students must submit an essay written in an English class. More details can be found on the English Department website.

Dr. Susan Naramore Maher Scholarship for Best Graduate Research Essay
Description: This is a scholarship for an English graduate student. One student will be selected for this award for their outstanding research and writing.
Criteria:

Applicants must be enrolled as an English graduate student, English graduate certificate student, or TESOL, ADWR, Tech Comm. Students must submit an essay written in an English class. More details can be found on the English Department website.

John J. McKenna Undergraduate Scholarship in Creative Nonfiction
Description: This scholarship is for a student of creative nonfiction writing for the academic year. Awards for Runner-Up and Honorable Mention will also be given.
Criteria:

Undergraduate students seeking a major in English, certification in English or Language Arts in the College of Education, or Writers Workshop students are all eligible to apply.

Applicants must have completed 27 hours of college credit by the start of the academic year covered under the scholarship.

1st Place: Up to 12 hours of tuition and fees in both fall and spring semesters and a book stipend of $350

Runner-Up: $3,000

Honorable Mention: $1,500

John J. McKenna Graduate Fellowship in Creative Nonfiction
Description: This fellowship is for a graduate student of creative nonfiction writing for the academic year. Awards for Runner-Up and Honorable Mention will also be given.
Criteria:

Graduate students admitted to or currently pursuing the Graduate Certificate in Advanced Writing and/or the Master of Arts degree in English are eligible to apply—including current undergraduates who have been accepted to either of these graduate programs for the following year.

History

Shuflata Master's Thesis Fellowship
Description: The George and Virginia Dare Shuflata Graduate Fellowship is available to outstanding graduate students to support the successful completion of their Master’s in history at UNO.
Criteria:

All History master's students who plan to conclude the program in the following two semesters are eligible to apply. Students should submit to the Graduate Program Chair a brief prospectus and a letter of recommendation.

Amount:

The award is equivalent to one semester GTA stipend and lasts for one semester (Spring or Fall). If the student still has to take HIST 8040, the tuition for that course up to 6 credit hours will be covered from fellowship funds, in addition to their stipend.

Jo Ann Carrigan Scholarship
Description: The Jo Ann Carrigan Scholarship is available to incoming graduate students pursuing a Master's Degree in History every fall and spring semester of the academic year. The number of scholarships available during a given academic year may vary based on the availability of funding.
Criteria:

Award preference is merit-based. To apply, the prospective student must indicate their interest in being considered for the scholarship by indicating “Y” to the question “Assistantship Interest?” in their graduate program application. The applicant pool is subject to review by the Graduate Program Committee.

Amount:

The scholarship covers the tuition costs and associated fees of

  1. the recipient's first eighteen credit hours and
  2. the recipient's last three credit hours of course work - if completed within a four-semester time frame.

Mathematics

James Earl Scholarship
Description: Each spring, scholarship recipients for the coming year are selected based on their overall GPA, outstanding performance in mathematics courses and their participation in departmental activities such as the Putnam Exam, Problem of the Week, undergraduate research, Mathematics Awareness Month, MSLC tutoring and Math Lab.
Criteria:

Students do not apply for this scholarship, but rather are selected based on merit.

Amount: $5,000 (divided annually amongst several deserving mathematics majors)

Hitchcock Foundation Scholarship
Description: The Hitchcock Foundation annually contributes a $500 scholarship, each to the Biology, Math, Chemistry and Physics Departments.
Criteria:

The Math Department awards this scholarship to a deserving incoming freshman who declares math as their major. The awardee will continue to receive the scholarship for four years by remaining a math major, maintaining a 3.0 GPA or better, and maintaining full-time status.

Amount: $500 annually for 4 years (see above for criteria)

NASA MUST Scholarship
Description: This program is open to all U.S. citizens, who are pursuing an undergraduate degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) discipline at a college or university that is accredited in the United States are eligible for the MUST funding opportunity.
Criteria:

Students pursuing a degree in a physical science, technology, engineering and mathematics related fields are eligible to apply. Requirements include: must be a U.S. citizen, underrepresented groups are encouraged to apply. Must be full-time at a U.S. university with a minimum of 3.0 GPA.

Amount: $500 annually for 4 years (see above for criteria)

Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grants
Description: This program is open to all U.S. citizens, who are pursuing an undergraduate degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) discipline at a college or university that is accredited in the United States are eligible for the MUST funding opportunity.
Criteria:

Students pursuing a degree in a physical science, technology, engineering and mathematics related fields are eligible to apply. Requirements include: must be a U.S. citizen, underrepresented groups are encouraged to apply. Must be full-time at a U.S. university with a minimum of 3.0 GPA.

Amount: $500 annually for 4 years (see above for criteria)

Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grants (2)
Description: Once a degree or teaching certificate is earned, TEACH grant recipients must spend at least four of the next eight years teaching in a 'high-need' field (math is one) with at least 30% poor students.
Criteria:

Students must have a GPA of 3.25 or score in the top 25% on the college/graduate admissions test.

Amount: $4,000 a year/up to $16,000 for undergraduates, or $8,000 for master's students

Alliance/Merck Ciencia Hispanic Scholars Program
Description: The Alliance/Merck Ciencia (Science) Hispanic Scholars Program is a new partnership to improve Hispanic student access to higher education and degrees in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).
Criteria:

Hispanic college students from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, U.S. territories and Puerto Rico pursuing a bachelor's degree in a STEM field major are invited to apply

Amount: $2,000 one-time scholarship, of which 25 will be awarded.

Mutual of Omaha Actuarial Scholarship for Minority Students
Description: The Mutual of Omaha Actuarial Scholarship for Minority Students is awarded to undergraduates preparing for actuarial careers.
Criteria:

Contingent upon the recipient's continued satisfactory preparation for an actuarial career as noted in the Scholarship Guidelines.

Amount: $5,000 award, which is paid in equal installments during the school year ($2,500 per semester)

Darlene & Orville D. Menard Scholarship
Description: Supports undergraduates majoring in political science who will be seniors in the upcoming academic year.

It is awarded primarily on the basis of academic achievement, without regard to financial need.

Dr. Loree Bykerk Memorial Scholarship
Description: Supports undergraduates majoring in political science who will be sophomores, juniors, or seniors in the upcoming academic year.
Criteria:

Applicants should have a minimum GPA of 3.0 and six hours of political science courses. Priority may be given to students who demonstrate financial need and/or are first generation college students.

Dr. Paul Landow Scholarship
Description: Supports undergraduates majoring in political science who will be sophomores, juniors, or seniors in the upcoming academic year.
Criteria:

Applicants should have a minimum GPA of 3.0 and six hours of political science courses. Priority may be given to students who graduated from an Omaha Public School District High School, demonstrate financial need and/or are first generation college students.

The Stephen R. Paige Memorial Scholarship
Description: This scholarship will be awarded on the basis of financial need and academic achievement.
Criteria:

Applicants should describe their financial situation (sources of support) to establish need.

The Mary E. Flannigan Memorial Research Scholarship
Description: This scholarship will be awarded on the basis of involvement in research.
Criteria:

Applicants should describe research activities such as FUSE grants awarded, assisting in faculty labs, independent study projects, senior thesis, conference presentations, and publications.

The Mary E. Flannigan Memorial Service Scholarship
Description: This scholarship will be awarded on the basis of department, university, and community service.
Criteria:

Applicants should describe both UNO and volunteer and community service activities. Leadership positions are especially worthy of note.

Ron Burke Scholarship
Description: Supports a junior or senior level student Religious Studies major in the College of Arts and Sciences.

Dale Stover Scholarship
Description: Supports regularly enrolled students at UNO, religious studies majors in the College of Arts and Sciences or have declared religious studies as their area of concentration (major) in the Division of Continuing Studies.

Sam and Frances Fried Holocaust and Genocide Academy

Fried Academy Scholarship
Description: The Sam and Frances Fried Holocaust and Genocide Academy is please to offer scholarships to students pursuing a Holocaust and Genocide Studies minor. Fried Academy scholarships will award up to five undergraduate students per year.
Criteria:

Applicants must be a Holocaust and Genocide Studies minor in good standing and a full-time student (at least 12 credit hours per semester).

Preference may be given to those who have demonstrated financial need and/or are first-generation college students.

Amount:

Each scholarship is valued between $500 and $2500
