Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS)

CAPS provides programs and services on campus that assist students in maximizing their potential while at UNO.

Counseling services are confidential and all conducted by Licensed Mental Health Practitioners and a graduate student.

As the school year begins…

We welcome new and returning students to the Maverick Family and a new school year! For our returning students, it can be a time of reflection and making adjustments needed for new perspectives and plans. For new students, it can be a time of adjusting to the newness of everything: living arrangements; assuming responsibilities you may have to take on for the first time; finding your way through myriad systems; classes; and learning to manage your time for all of these things.

Whatever adjustments you are making to the new school year, it is a time when we are also mindful of the human needs of others, particularly those who have been deleteriously touched by the recent natural disaster in the Houston area. In our effort to cope, we are sensitive to the helplessness and loss of control which many survivors may feel from this experience. Likely, there are some members of our Maverick Family who have felt the impact of the hurricane more directly.

If you, or someone you know, are feeling the stress of the adjustments as you begin this semester, remember CAPS staff is here to support you.

In solidarity,

The Staff of UNO CAPS

Diversity Statement

CAPS is committed to providing a safe and welcoming experience to ALL students, faculty and staff who come through our doors. Every person has the right to be treated with dignity and respect. The counseling staff regularly attends trainings and workshops to further competency as it relates to issues of diversity. In addition, the staff serves on various committees on campus and provides important trainings in order to promote an accepting environment on UNO''s campus and in the community.

We recognize that students, faculty, and staff come from intersecting identities that include their ethnic/racial identity, gender, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, country of origin, age, socio-economic status, body shape/size, ability, religion/spirituality, and opinion/point of view. Our staff work to make sure each person we work with feels valued and appreciated for who they are. We also recognize that people who come to see us often struggle with issues related to diversity such as discrimination, acts of bias, feelings of non-acceptance and self-discovery. We will work to make sure each person feels safe and supported.
