  4. Individual Counseling

Individual counseling at Counseling & Psychological Services (CAPS) provides a safe and confidential space for you to:

  • Manage Stress Effectively
  • Gain New Perspectives
  • Develop Coping Strategies
  • Connect with Relevant Resources

Individual counseling is a supportive environment where you can reflect, receive encouragement, and work towards solutions at your own pace.

These services are offered at no charge to students who are currently enrolled in at least one credit hour.

Your First Appointment

Your first appointment will involve a 60-90 minute intake assessment.

Prior to your visit, you will receive forms to complete.

Upon arrival, your counselor will review these forms and then guide you to their office. During this intake, the counselor will engage in a conversation to better understand your primary concerns and establish the foundation for your counseling journey.

After the assessment, the counseling staff will discuss your options for moving forward. This may include scheduling ongoing sessions with a CAPS counselor, referring you to a community provider, connecting you with a support group, or making other appropriate referrals.

The Counseling Process

  • CAPS offers brief individual therapy, typically consisting of 8-10 sessions. Over the course of a few weeks or months, counseling will focus on addressing specific issues or goals.
  • We recognize that sharing personal concerns with someone new can be a vulnerable experience. Our staff is committed to fostering a supportive and comfortable counseling environment to help ease this process. We prioritize creating a safe space where you can feel at ease while discussing your issues and working towards your goals.
  • In this brief therapy model, building a strong, collaborative relationship with your counselor and maintaining consistent attendance are both beneficial for achieving the best outcomes.
  • If there’s something you want your counselor to know that hasn’t been addressed yet, feel free to share it. Additionally, if you have any questions or concerns about the counseling process or anything else, don’t hesitate to ask.
