UNO is committed to ensuring ethics, honesty, and integrity in the pursuit of our efforts in education, research, and outreach. ORCA and UNeMed provide guidance, resources, and oversight to ensure that UNO and its project directors are in compliance with the regulations and policies that apply to UNO activities.

Intellectual Property Basics

  1. An INVENTION is a novel or unique device, process, method, or compound.

  2. A PATENT is the grant of property rights issued to the inventor(s) by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). Typically an invention must be novel, have utility, and be non-obvious in order to be assigned a patent.

  3. COPYRIGHT is an exclusive, legal right of the author(s) of original work(s) to print, publish, and/or otherwise make these materials publicly available.

  4. A protected/registered design, word, or symbol used to identify a product or a company is a TRADEMARK.

  5. A NEW INVENTION NOTIFICATION (NIN) is a confidential document created by Inventors (faculty, students, and/or staff) describing the elements and details of any new invention. The NIN will be the initial document submitted to the Tech Transfer Office (TTO) and used to determine the patentability of the described invention.
