As we prepare to enter a new calendar year, many people reflect on their goals and look for meaningful ways to continue growing. Unlike traditional self-improvement goals, whether it’s running or picking up new hobbies, the opportunity to learn in a flexible online format is a great way to upskill. As technology evolves, the way we learn continues to change as well: from new formats, platforms, and the need for detailed credentials—professionals and learners alike need support in that learning. This is where online learning comes in. With modern technology continuously evolving, we are challenged to take on new formats, platforms, and credentials, all of which support our growth as professionals and individual learners.

Why is Online Learning Important?

Online learning bridges the gap between accessibility and personalization—two areas where traditional learning has historically fallen short. Old learning models often require rigid timeframes of productivity in the classroom, whereas online learning offers flexibility and cost effectiveness while allowing individuals to advance their education from anywhere. The opportunity to use online learning to “self-improve” from a professional standpoint becomes an integral part of life, providing balance as you challenge your mind and grow as a learner. But the question, as it pertains to optimizing online learning, becomes less about the “why” and more focused on “how,” specifically how we can make the most of our online learning experiences. As you enter a new year and feel the momentum that comes with this change, Online at UNO has a few tips to help you maximize your online learning experience to help you achieve your goals.

1. Discover Various Learning Methods:

Online learning offers the unique opportunity, and accessibility, to elevate your learning and study methods. Use multimedia, visual assets, and gamification study methods to try new styles of learning. Additionally, finding new study environments can elevate your learning experience as research suggests that changing your environment can build focus, creativity and memory as it breaks the monotony of rigid routines. Because online learning is accessible anywhere, and at any time, the opportunities to change locations are endless.

2. Review and Repeat: Keep Learning Fresh

While spending time online may feel tedious, taking time to learn material in chunks rather than in one long session can break up the learning cycle. By allowing yourself to focus on one module, unit or concept at a time, you can ease into your learning experience. Reducing burnout and keeping the momentum alive allows your online learning experience to feel authentic to you.

3. Go at Your Own Pace

With modules and entire courses at your fingertips, the excitement to keep working and practicing can feel both thrilling and overwhelming. Scheduling time for allotted breaks helps your brain to process the information and stay sharp. We recommend using the Pomodoro Technique, a study method where you use a timer to focus for 25-minute intervals and separate study sessions with 3-5 minute breaks. This improves focus, decreases burnout, and optimizes time management.

4. Know Your Style

Active learning is an educational approach that allows individuals to engage with content through discussions, problem-solving, and flashcard review, rather than just reading the content. By following an active learning model in your studies, you can further work with the information you learn and find applicable examples that foster critical thinking and knowledge retention.

5. Try New Courses

One of the best ways to expand your mind is to expand your interests. Have interest in different topics? Taking a microcredential course may help you discover hidden passions, potential career paths, and evolve in your ability to adapt quickly in professional scenarios. There are various online programs at UNO that offer low-cost, flexible learning opportunities. You can learn more about these unique opportunities here.

Can Online Learning Help Me Reach New Goals?

With countless online learning opportunities available at your fingertips, the ability to improve your professional skillsets and challenge your mind are endless. As a new calendar year approaches, online learning could be your key to success in 2026.
