Why Headings Matter
Headings provide the backbone of an accessible course page. They give students a clear outline of the content, make information easier to scan, and allow assistive technologies like screen readers to navigate quickly.
Without headings, a page can feel like a wall of text, which overwhelms students and slows down learning. With well-organized headings, students can find what they need, focus on the content, and move through the course with confidence.
How to Use Headings
Headings are not just about making text larger or bold. They provide a structural hierarchy that organizes the page. In Canvas, you can apply heading styles directly in the Rich Content Editor.
Please watch this short video to learn how to properly use headings in your course.
General Tips for Using Headings Effectively
- Heading 1 is the page title. In Canvas, this is automatically assigned, so you won’t see it as an option in the rich content editor.
- Break your content into main sections with Heading 2. For example, “Assignment Instructions” or “Weekly Objectives.”
- Use Headings 3 and 4 for subtopics under each section. For example “Step 1” or “Step 2” under “Assignment Instructions.”
- Keep headings short, clear, and descriptive so students know exactly what follows.
- Think of headings as the table of contents or outline for your page.
