General Information

Biography

Dr. Krane has directed grant projects funded by the U.S. Department of Education, the U.S. Geological Survey, the U.S. Information Agency, the Fund for the Improvement of Post-Secondary Education, the Japan Foundation, the Nebraska Commission on Local Government Restructuring and Innovation, the Nebraska Department of Economic Development, and the Nebraska Department of Social Services. In 2001-2002 he was the faculty research associate for the county government managing for results component of the Government Performance Project, co-sponsored by the Pew Foundation, Governing Magazine, and Syracuse University's Maxwell School. In 1995 Dr. Krane was elected President, UNO Faculty Senate. Dr. Krane has long been active in the American Society for Public Administration serving on the National Council, the Board of Insurance Trustees, the Publications Committee, the Section on Intergovernmental Administration and Management, and on several ASPA task forces. He also is active in the American Political Science Association, especially in its Section on Federalism and Intergovernmental Relations, its Section on Public Policy, and its Section on Public Administration. In 1985 Dr. Krane was a Fulbright professor at the Federal University of Minas Gerais in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, and in 2011 he was a Fulbright professor at the Federal University of Bahia, Salvador, Brazil. He has been a peer reviewer for the Fulbright Senior Specialist in Political Science and Public Administration program. Dr. Krane has provided technical assistance to officials in state and local government in the United States as well as public officials in Brazil, Japan, Moldova, Romania, and Venezuela. He has served on the Board of Trustees, Nebraska Sanitary Improvement District no. 427.

Hobbies and Interests:

Tropical beaches, fine cuisine, excellent vintages, independent films, American jazz, and Musica Popular Brasileira.

Research Interests

Dr. Krane is a co-author of Compromised Compliance: Implementation of the 1965 Voting Rights Act and of Mississippi Government and Politics: Modernizers versus Traditionalists. He is the senior editor of Home Rule In America: A Fifty State Handbook and a co-editor of From Nation To States: The Small Cities Community Development Block Grant Program. He has published refereed articles in professional periodicals including the Journal of Public Administration Research and Theory, Public Administration Review, The International Journal of Public Administration, Public Performance & Management Review, Public Manager, Policy Studies Review, The Journal of Public Budgeting, Accounting, and Financial Management, Publius: The Journal of Federalism, The Journal of Politics, International Studies Quarterly, International Political Science Review, PS: Political Science and Politics, Southern Studies, State and Local Government Review, and The Journal of Developing Areas. Dr. Krane edited the Publius annual issue on the state of American federalism from 2001 to 2006. He has also published chapters in twenty-one books. Currently he is examining the collaborative management of civic events and the implementation of the 2010 Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.
