Thomas Gunther

Biography

Baritone Thomas Gunther is an active performer and voice educator whose teaching draws upon a professional career spanning opera, musical theatre, concert repertoire, and contemporary vocal styles. He has taught voice at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, Doane University, the College of Saint Rose, Bemidji State University, the University of North Dakota, Skidmore College, and the Omaha Conservatory of Music, as well as through summer festivals and young artist programs.

As a performer, Gunther has appeared with companies and organizations throughout the United States and abroad. Recent engagements include Tonio in Pagliacci with Soo Opera Theatre, Marcello in La Bohème with South Bend Lyric Opera, Elder McLean in Susannah and Fiorello in Il barbiere di Siviglia with Opera Omaha, Count Almaviva in Le nozze di Figaro, Papageno in The Magic Flute, Scarpia in Tosca, Germont in La Traviata, and Eisenstein in Die Fledermaus. Other career highlights include Stanley Kowalski in A Streetcar Named Desire with the Merola Opera Program, roles with Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, Indianapolis Opera, and numerous regional opera companies, as well as performances in the Dominican Republic and Italy.

Equally at home on the concert stage, Gunther has appeared as a soloist in works including Orff’s Carmina Burana, Britten’s War Requiem, Handel’s Messiah, and Fauré’s Requiem, and has presented recitals and concert programs at universities and performing arts organizations throughout the country.

Gunther’s work as an educator emphasizes healthy and efficient vocal production, musicianship, dramatic communication, and the development of versatile singers capable of working across classical, musical theatre, and contemporary styles. His teaching is informed by extensive professional stage experience and additional training in acting, stage movement, and stage combat. He has served as a clinician, adjudicator, music director, stage director, and opera workshop instructor, with particular interests in helping young singers connect vocal technique with character, movement, audition skills, and professional preparation.

Gunther was a member of the Merola Opera Program and has participated in artist training programs with Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, Indianapolis Opera, Kentucky Opera, the International Vocal Arts Institute, Des Moines Metro Opera, and others. His honors include Second Place in the National Association of Teachers of Singing Artist Awards (NATSAA) national competition and awards in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions.

He holds an Artist Diploma in Opera Performance from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, a Master of Music in Voice Performance from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, and a Bachelor of Music in Voice Performance from Simpson College. He has also completed doctoral coursework in Voice Performance at the University of Kentucky, where his doctoral work focuses on opera workshop as a bridge between academic training and the professional performing world.
