Dr. Derrick Fox is the Director of Choral Activities and Assistant Professor of Music at the University of Nebraska-Omaha and most recently served as Assistant Professor of Music Education and Choral Conducting in the Ithaca College School of Music. He earned a Bachelor of Education from Arkansas State University, a Master of Music in Choral Conducting from the University of Missouri Columbia and a Doctor of Musical Arts in Choral Conducting from Michigan State University, where he was awarded the prestigious University Enrichment Graduate Fellowship Award. Dr. Fox has also served on the faculties of MacArthur Junior High School in Jonesboro, AR, Parkway North High School and Maryville University in St. Louis, MO.
Dr. Fox is an active adjudicator and clinician for regional, state, national and international organizations from the middle/junior high school to the collegiate level. He has worked with ensembles in Arkansas, Tennessee, Connecticut, Iowa, Pennsylvania, Kansas, Maryland, Missouri, West Virginia, Texas, New York, Florida, Utah, Illinois, Louisiana, Michigan, Malaysia and Lithuania. Dr. Fox’s upcoming engagements include honor choirs in Kansas, Nebraska, Kansas and Utah and all-state choirs in Arkansas, Colorado, Texas and Kansas as well as collaborations/presentations in Hawaii, Alaska and Tennessee. He is honored to be invited to conduct the 7-10 Men’s Choir for the Southwest American Choral Directors Convention in 2018. He has presented sessions nationally and internationally that focus on assessment in the choral classroom, building classroom community, rehearsal strategies, choral conducting techniques and shape note singing in the African American community.
As a baritone soloist, Dr. Fox has collaborated with various organizations; among them are the Arkansas Symphony, Lansing Symphony, St. Louis Symphony, Columbia Chorale, the University of Nebraska at Omaha, University of Missouri, Michigan State University, Webster University and the Espaço Cultural (Brasilia, Brazil). He can be heard singing selections from Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess on the compact disc In This Hid Clearing, available on the Naxos Classical Music label. He was also a featured soloist with the St. Louis Symphony in the performance of Meredith Monk’s Night, for eight solo voices and orchestra.Dr. Fox’s articles have appeared in the Choral Journal, Choral Cues, ChorTeach, Teaching Music and educational blogs published by the National Association for Music Education and SmartMusic. He is a contributing author in the Hal Leonard/McGraw Hill choral textbook Voices in Concert, his arrangement Lord, Give Me Just a Little More Time is available in the Hal Leonard Sacred Music Series, and his arrangement of My Spirit Looks to God Alone will be published in the G. Schirmer Andrea Ramsey Choral Series.
