Janet Napolitano, Chuck Hagel Discuss Importance of U.S. Leadership During the Next Stages of International Diplomacy

Janet Napolitano, former U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security and former Governor of Arizona, discussed Ukraine, cybersecurity, and the impact of disinformation, among other topics, with Hagel, a UNO alumnus, former U.S. Secretary of Defense, and former U.S. Senator from Nebraska.

On Monday, April 25, the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) and the Atlantic Council welcomed the UNO community, and others, to hear from two national leaders on civic engagement and national security.

Janet Napolitano, former U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security, and former Governor of Arizona and UNO alumnus Chuck Hagel, former U.S. Secretary of Defense, and former U.S. Senator from Nebraska, came together over one hour to discuss a varity of topics, including:

  • The impact of climate change on national security
  • How Russia's invasion of Ukraine may shape geopolitics in the future
  • Ways the international community can hold Russia accountable for its actions
  • The impact of misinformation and disinformation worldwide
  • UNO's work with NCITE and the role of the Department of Homeland Security today
  • How we can inspire the next generation of civic leaders

The event included opening remarks from Napolitano, who is currently a professor of public policy at the Goldman School of Public Policy and the founder and faculty director of the Center for Security in Politics at UC Berkeley, before a discussion between Napolitano and Hagel moderated by Jody Neathery-Castro, Ph.D., interim director of the School of Music and distinguished associate professor of political science at UNO.

About the Global Forum Series

The 2022 event is the fourth installment of the Chuck Hagel Forum in Global Leadership series. The series debuted at UNO in 2019 with a discussion between Hagel and then-former U.S. Vice President Joe Biden on pressing global issues. The 2020 event featured former U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry. The 2021 event featured former U.S Secretary of Homeland Security Tom Ridge.

For the second consecutive year, this forum is hosted in partnership with the Atlantic Council, a nonpartisan organization that galvanizes U.S. leadership and engagement in the world, in partnership with allies and partners, to shape solutions to global challenges.

This event series explores critical issues with global leaders in search of solutions to today’s global challenges. The Chuck Hagel Forum in Global Leadership provides an opportunity to engage with Hagel and other global leaders, policymakers, and thinkers.

About the Atlantic Council
