Goals & Objectives
to improve the evaluation of teaching
- Build consensus and common language to evaluate effective teaching methods
- Use multiple sources of information to evaluate and inform teaching
- Develop and sustain inclusive classrooms and practices
- Improve synthesis of metrics and outcomes of teacher effectiveness at the department or school level
Why are we doing this?
Based on the recent updates from the Board of Regents regarding policy, coupled with the existing breadth and depth of literature citing the challenges surrounding the use of student evaluations exclusively as measurements of teaching, an ad hoc committee aimed to address opportunities for the evaluation of teaching on the UNO campus. Teaching is often measured through student evaluations which are used to determine retention, promotion, and tenure.
Most evaluations focus on a narrow range of teaching practices and prioritize limited sources of evidence. The proposed framework requires multiple sources of information to inform teaching evaluation, both formative and summative. These include student voice, self-evaluation and reflection, as well as to peer feedback.
