Scholarly Publishing at Little or No Cost!

UNO Libraries supports open access publishing by participating in Open Access publishing agreements with a variety of publishers. These agreements allow UNO authors to publish at no cost or at a discounted price. Many of our agreements are through the Big Ten Academic Alliance.

The Biochemical Society is the newest agreement through the Big Ten. It allows UNO authors to publish their work open access at no cost. The agreement covers any of the Biochemical Society journals, including BioScience Reports and Neuronal Signaling.

To be eligible the corresponding author must be affiliated with UNO and ensure that they specify UNO as their organization during the submission process. This involves clicking "Validate Institution" and selecting UNO from the list presented. Once validated, your costs are covered, and you will be prompted to select a Creative Commons license.

Elsevier is our only open access publishing agreement that is not through the Big Ten Academic Alliance. This agreement gives UNO authors a 10% discount on article processing charges for open access in many of Elsevier’s hybrid journals. To be eligible the corresponding author must be affiliated with UNO and when the article is accepted for publication, they will receive an email linking them to Elsevier’s Editorial Management System to complete the publishing journey. Under the “Rights and Access” step you must choose UNO as your institutional affiliation to publish open access. The library receives an email to verify your affiliation, and once verified the author will receive an email with the discounted price. Once the article processing charge is paid the author chooses a Creative Commons license.

Wiley is our most generous open access publishing agreement through the Big Ten Academic Alliance. Under this agreement UNO corresponding author can publish their research or review open access articles at no cost in all of Wiley’s gold open access journals and hybrid journals including Hindawi journals.

The UNO corresponding authors must identify their institutional affiliations when submitting the article for Wiley’s editorial management system to identify them as eligible. For hybrid journals the author will be presented with the choice of publishing open access once the article is accepted. The library will verify the author’s eligibility and the author will then be prompted to select a Creative Commons license.

Through the Big Ten we also have agreements with IOP Publishing, PLoS Biology, PLoS Medicine, and Cambridge University Press. The PLoS agreements and Cambridge University Press Agreement ended in 2023 and are being renegotiated by the Big Ten with articles most likely being covered through the end of 2024. For all of these agreements, the corresponding author must be affiliated with UNO for costs to be covered.

For more information on the library’s publishing agreements visit our Open Access and Scholarly Publishing guide. In the guide you can find information on open access, all of the details on the agreements, Creative Commons information, and more useful information on how authors can keep control of their work when publishing.
