Biography

At home as both a jazz and classical saxophonist, Matthew Storie is Assistant Professor of Saxophone at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO). He is a graduate of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where he received a Doctor of Musical Arts with a cognate in classical saxophone and Master of Music degree in Jazz Performance and was a student of Chip McNeill and Debra Richtmeyer. He received a Bachelor of Music degree in Saxophone Performance from Furman University.

Dr. Storie has had the opportunity to perform with Carl Allen, the Glenn Miller Orchestra, Jiggs Wigham, Bob Moses, Sharel Cassity, Tom Walsh, Brad Dutz, Tito Carrillo, Larry Gray, Chip McNeill, Rick Simerly, Stockton Helbing, Bill Sears, and has opened for Charlie Daniels.

Storie is founder and bandleader of Simply This Quintet, a collaborative ensemble that performs original compositions by members of the band. This ensemble released their second album entitled Stepping Up, in 2021. They regularly tour and present masterclasses at universities and music conferences. They have presented masterclasses and concerts at Furman University and Anderson University in South Carolina, The Ohio State in Ohio, and Millikin University in Illinois. As a solo artist, Storie released his debut album of original compositions in 2022. This album, Hwy 538, features music inspired by memories and experiences from his summers spent on the North Shore of Lake Huron in Ontario, Canada. As a classical saxophonist, Dr. Storie is a founding member and co-leader of the Payadora Trio, a collaborative ensemble consisting of saxophone, flute, and piano. This trio is dedicated to the performing and commissioning of works by underrepresented composers. Its first commissioned work was an arrangement of an Argentinian tango titled “Payadora” by Jesús Fuentes. Dr. Storie’s dissertation research resulted in the creation of a resource to aid college level classical saxophonists in developing a jazz sound. He has presented this research at the 2022 American Single Reed Summit in Columbia, SC and most recently at the 2023 Jazz Education Network conference in Orlando, FL. He plans to continue this research in improving the instruction and accessibility of jazz for classical saxophonists.

Dr. Storie is active nationally as a clinician. He has been a guest artist at Coastal Carolina University, presented clinics at the Jazz Education Network Conference, North American Saxophone Alliance Conference, World Saxophone Congress Conference, and the South Carolina Music Educators Association conference. He holds memberships in a variety of professional music societies including the North American Saxophone Alliance, Jazz Education Network, College Music Society, ASCAP, and Pi Kappa Lambda.
