About Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)

We are committed to fostering linguistic competence in our students. In order to meet this goal, we follow these student learning outcomes (SLO) as a guide.

SLO 1: Aural Comprehension: Students completing the baccalaureate program in World Languages (concentrating in French, German, Spanish for Health Sciences, or Spanish) will be able to listen to and comprehend target-language texts at the Advanced-low level according to the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines or the B1 level according to the Common European Frame of Reference.

SLO 2: Oral Production: Students completing the baccalaureate program in World Languages (concentrating in French, German, Spanish for Health Sciences, or Spanish) will be able to produce target-language texts at the Advanced-low level according to the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines or the B1 level according to the Common European Frame of Reference.

SLO 3: Reading Comprehension: Students completing the baccalaureate program in World Languages (concentrating in French, German, Spanish for Health Sciences, or Spanish) will be able to read and comprehend target-language texts at the Advanced-low level according to the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines or the B1 level according to the Common European Frame of Reference.

SLO 4: Written Production: Students completing the baccalaureate program in World Languages (concentrating in French, German, Spanish for Health Sciences, or Spanish) will be able to take notes, compose cohesive summaries, as well as narratives and descriptions of a factual nature. Target-language writing skills will be at the Advanced-low level according to the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines or the B1 level according to the Common European Frame of Reference.

SLO 5: Cultural Competency: Students completing the baccalaureate program in World Languages (concentrating in French, German, Spanish for Health Sciences, or Spanish) will be well prepared for intercultural situations and future intercultural learning that occurs beyond the university classroom.

Based on our last program SLO assessment (January 2026), 98% of all students in our BA program have attained all five SLOs in the areas of Aural Comprehension, Oral Production, Reading Comprehension, Written Production, and Intercultural Competence. This means that students are able to listen to and comprehend target language texts; produce oral target-language texts; understand conventional narrative and descriptive texts with a clear underlying structure; take notes, compose cohesive summaries, as well as narratives and descriptions of a factual nature; and communicate effectively with speakers from other cultures.
