World Languages & Literature Department Scholarships

We are committed to fostering linguistic competence in our students. In order to meet this goal, we follow these student learning outcomes (SLO) as a guide.

1. Angela Valle Sigma Delta Pi Endowed Scholarship

Valle

The Angela Valle Sigma Delta Pi Endowed Scholarship is a prestigious award designed to support full-time students majoring or minoring in Spanish within the Department of World Languages and Literature at UNO. Established by Dr. Ángela Valle, an esteemed emeritus professor, and founder of UNO’s Omicron Lambda chapter of Sigma Delta Pi in 1983, this scholarship underscores her dedication to fostering excellence in Spanish education. Candidates for The Angela Valle Sigma Delta Pi Scholarship must be active members of the Omicron Lambda Chapter of Sigma Delta Pi, demonstrating their commitment to the National Hispanic Honor Society. Additionally, candidates are evaluated based on their academic achievements, with a minimum cumulative GPA requirement of 3.0 or above. This scholarship serves as a lasting tribute to Dr. Ángela Valle's enduring impact on the academic community. It aims to empower students who share her passion for Spanish language and culture, encouraging their continued pursuit of excellence in their studies within the Department of World Languages and Literature at UNO.

2. Helen D. Disney Foreign Language Scholarship

Discover the valuable opportunity presented by the Helen D. Disney Foreign Language Scholarship at UNO. This scholarship is designed to assist World Language majors facing financial challenges. Established through the thoughtful provisions of a specified will, the scholarship is intended for students who meet the following criteria:

(a) The student shall be financially needy;

(b) The student shall be enrolled in the foreign language department of the University;

(c) The foreign language department of the University shall select the student to receive the income from this scholarship grant;

Recipients will be chosen by the Department of World Languages and Literature to receive the scholarship income. Consider applying for this opportunity to ease financial pressures while pursuing your degree at UNO. Apply before the deadline and explore the potential academic support available to you.

3. Dodson-Bloom Abroad Scholarship

Are you a Spanish major at UNO, or are you completing a Spanish Language endorsement for your major in Secondary Education? And are you studying abroad for the first time? If so, you can apply for the Dodson-Bloom Abroad Scholarship.

The Dodson-Bloom Abroad Scholarship is awarded to regularly enrolled undergraduate students at the University of Nebraska at Omaha participating in a study abroad experience for the first time during the year in which the scholarship is awarded.

Students must be pursuing a major in World Languages with a concentration in Spanish within the Department of World Languages and Literature, College of Arts and Sciences at UNO, or pursuing a major in Secondary Education with a Spanish Language endorsement within the Department of Teacher Education, College of Education at UNO.

When applying, don’t forget to include information about your extracurricular and community service activities related to the study of Spanish, as well as any academic distinctions you have received. You must be a regularly enrolled undergraduate student to be eligible.

4. Martha C. Page Study Abroad Travel Scholarship

The Martha C. Page Study Abroad Travel Scholarship, funded through a generous donation provided by a former French major, is awarded to students traveling to a French or Francophone country in an accredited study abroad program through the Department of World Languages and Literature at UNO. Candidates must be majoring in French at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above, and must have demonstrated exemplary performance in the classroom and, where applicable, in extracurricular activities such as French Club or conversation tables. Preference will be given to candidates who have demonstrated need with respect to resources for travel outside the United States.

5. Maurice and Cora Conner Delta Phi Alpha Fund

The Maurice and Cora Conner Delta Phi Alpha Fund is a unique opportunity for UNO undergraduates looking to immerse themselves in German language and culture through a study abroad experience in Europe. This scholarship supports students who will study in a European country where German is either the primary or secondary language.

To be eligible, applicants should have completed at least two years of college-level German, with at least one year at UNO. However, if a student is already enrolled in a structured study program in Europe, they can still qualify by providing the necessary documentation.

Preference will be given to students who show strong academic potential and are members of Delta Phi Alpha, the National German Honor Society.

This scholarship was established in honor of Maurice Conner, a Professor Emeritus of German in the Department of World Languages and Literature at UNO, to continue his legacy of promoting excellence in German studies.

6. Frederic Leroy Ludwig German Memorial Fund

Explore the unique opportunity offered by the Frederic Leroy Ludwig German Memorial Fund at UNO. This fund, established in memory of Frederic Leroy Ludwig, supports students enrolled in German coursework within the Department of World Languages and Literature, College of Arts and Sciences. Applications are open to candidates who meet the following criteria:

  • Enrollment in German Coursework: Exclusively available for German majors or minors within the Department of World Languages and Literature at UNO.
  • Preference for Nontraditional Students: Priority consideration will be given to nontraditional students, adding a distinctive aspect to the selection process.
  • Cumulative Grade Point Average of 2.0 or Above: Candidates must have a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher.
