Why Study a World Language?

Proficiency in foreign languages and world cultures are crucial assets in a world that is increasingly interdependent and interconnected by global media and markets. Graduates with foreign language skills and international understanding are better prepared to participate and succeed in the global marketplace.

Our Foreign Languages major will help you become a more globally engaged and cross-culturally aware citizen.

Majoring in a World Languages will help you:

  • Gain proficiency in another language
  • Improve your cognitive abilities as you develop the writing, speaking, and listening skills needed to be globally engaged
  • Gain greater awareness and understanding of different cultural values, priorities, and concerns
  • Learn to apply cross-cultural awareness in social and professional settings

What can I do with my World Languages and Literature degree?

World language majors usually enjoy a broad array of personal and professional opportunities. As a major, you will develop linguistic and cultural skills so that you can communicate clearly and effectively in another language, both orally and in writing. You will also be able to mediate between people from different cultures, conduct research, and critically analyze complex problems.

Such versatile skills can lead to a career in many different areas, such as business, healthcare, education, government, non-profit services, law enforcement, journalism, advertising, publishing, and travel & hospitality, to name a few.

World Languages & Secondary Education Certification Endorsements

Endorsements offered by UNO's College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences have been approved by the Nebraska Department of Education (NDE). An endorsement designates the area or areas in which individuals have completed coursework required by NDE and the educator preparation program.

Individuals may have one, or more endorsements attached to their teaching certificates. The coursework for a Secondary Education Endorsement is divided into four areas: General Education, Endorsement Content, Professional Core, and Secondary Professional requirements.

Note that the endorsement for World Languages is the same number of credits as the World Languages and Literature Major, so officially declare your WLL major as well!
