2022 Student Honoree: Sydney Meier
The Mathematics Department is thrilled to present our 2022 Student Honoree and recipient of the College of Arts and Sciences Dean's Award, Sydney Meier!
Sydney Meier (she/her/hers) is a double degree student studying Mathematics (Concentration: Operations Research) and Women’s & Gender Studies. Her research interests focus on applying operations research techniques to solve community problems. In her time at UNO, she has conducted an independent study under Dr. Fabio Vitor, creating a discrete event simulation model of the movement of trafficked individuals. This led to her attendance at two conferences and publication in the IISE’s Conference proceedings. Additionally, Sydney created a metric learning algorithm to identity hotel rooms used in human trafficking though an REU at Temple University. Outside of her academic pursuits, Sydney follows her passion for advocacy by volunteering as the Director of the Women and Gender Equity Center at UNO.
In her final year at UNO, Sydney Meier has been chosen as the Undergraduate Major Honoree for the Mathematics and Women’s & Gender Studies departments. Furthermore, she received the Dean’s Award for the College of Arts and Sciences. Sydney is the recipient of a Teaching Assistantship and the Diversity Doctoral Fellowship, Dean's Graduate Fellowship, and R.C. Edwards Fellowship at Clemson University, where she will pursue her Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering.
Mathematics faculty and staff applaud Sydney for her incredible work. Please join us in recognizing her and her fellow honorees at the 2022 Student Honors Convocation on April 26th, 2022 at 2:30 pm in the Straus Performing Arts Center.
