Prospective First-Years

  3. University Honors Program
  4. Admissions

We welcome applicants to the University Honors Program! Students should first apply to the University of Nebraska at Omaha and then, once they have their NUID, apply to the University Honors Program.

Applications for the Fall 2023 semester are now open. We accept applications on a rolling basis, with a soft deadline of February 1st--but why wait? Get your applications in as soon as you can!

How do I apply?

Incoming freshpeople applying to the University Honors Program must first be admitted to the University of Nebraska at Omaha. To access and complete the University Honors Program application:

  1. Sign into AcademicWorks, the University's Management system.
  2. Complete and submit the General Application Questions for university-wide scholarships.
  3. After completing the General Application Questions, you should be able to find the University Honors Program application under your "recommended opportunities". You will also be automatically directed to the Excellence and Distinguished Scholarship opportunities if you meet the criteria for those awards. You are welcome to use the same essays across all opportunities for which you are eligible (applying to the University Honors Program itself--and to the Excellence and DSC scholarships accordingly; cutting and pasting your essays is fine!). Honors scholarship applications have to be completed by February 1st.

So what is the application?

We ask you to complete one short (less than 100 words) and one longer (250-500) essay: you just have to be yourself in these essays. We suggest you write them offline and save copies, since the same essays can also be used in applying for Honors scholarship opportunities (where eligible) too. We also ask for a letter from a recommender; all the pieces are submitted through the university's managament system (found here).

I have submitted my application--what happens next?

The selection committee will begin reviewing applications to the University Honors Program after the February 1st deadline. Students can expect to hear from the University Honors Program in March.

Applicants for the Excellence and Distinguished Scholarships will also hear from Honors in March; the deadline for those scholarships is February 1st.

Deadline

The University Honors Program has soft deadlines, which means we are accepting applications currently. Fullest scholarship consideration at UNO is given to applications received by February 1st. The Honors Program accepts applications as long as we still have seats available in our classes, so do apply and try out Honors!

Holistic Application Approach

UNO's Honors Program takes a holistic approach to applications, so the essay and short answer about your unique qualities really matter as we consider them alongside other data, including but not limited to:

  • Evidence of advanced writing and critical thinking skills (demonstrated in an essay)
  • Evidence of intellectual, academic, and community engagement and commitment (demonstrated in essay/by recommender’s letter)
  • Composite ACT or combined SAT
  • High school class rank (if available) and high school GPA

Shadow Day

Each April, we offer a Shadow Day experience for high school students interested in the Honors Program. Participants have the opportunity to come to campus and explore the options with a current UNO student by attending classes, eating in the Student Center, and much more! This year's event was held on Tuesday, April 5th 2022; if you have been admitted to our program and would like more information, please email us.
