Youth Emergency Services (YES)

Overview: YES serves youth experiencing homelessness and near-homelessness by providing critically-needed resources which empower them to become self-sufficient.

YES helps youth in crisis get back on their feet in whatever ways they can. After meeting their immediate needs for food, shelter, clothing and safety, they create a support system which helps their clients flourish.

Emergency Shelter (YES)

Eligibility/ Requirements: Youth Aged 16-20 seeking shelter. Must undergo screening.

About: The YES Emergency Shelter is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week with youth workers, counselors and homeless youth advocates. Our emergency shelter is a family-style residence with separate sleeping areas for male and female clients. Youth share meals, television and computer privileges, and recreation and laundry facilities in a community area. A trained staff of counselors, advocates and youth workers spends individual, focused time with residents to help them work through the problems they face.

About: The Transitional Living Program at YES offers apartment style housing for runaway and homeless youth.

The TLP program is designed to provide an environment in which youth will be able to develop the ability to function independently in the community. TLP offers:

Maternity Housing and Shelter Services

Bethlehem House

Eligibility: assist women that are 19+ years and pregnant and who do not have other children in their custody. Ideally less than 25 weeks pregnant but can be flexible.

About: Provides a nurturing and loving home during the pregnancy. The staff

at the Bethlehem House help women create a plan for her and her child’s future. The goal is to provide a transition to independent living for the women and their baby.

Through the Salvation Army

Eligibility/ Requirements: For veterans and their families who are struggling with homelessness.

About: The program provides a thorough needs assessment, and veterans also receive employment assistance, case management and referrals to community resources and housing opportunities. Veterans enrolled in the VA-HOP program experience a high rate of success, with 95 percent of participants remaining in their permanent housing choice for at least 12 months from the time of admission.

Veterans enrolled in VA-CASS experience a high rate of success, with 97 percent of participants residing in permanent housing at discharge.

A Heartland Family Services Program

About: A crisis stabilization shelter serving survivors of sex trafficking. Heartland Housing Sanctuary is a facility-based program that houses up to 14 individuals or adults with children. The location of the facility is confidential to ensure the safety of its residents. The shelter is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and provides an array of services including advocacy, therapy, and case management.

Community Support Mental Health

Through the Salvation Army

Overview: Because mental illness often goes hand in hand with homelessness, joblessness, poverty and other challenges, many of our mental health programs offer not only counseling and medical support but also other services like a safe place to live, nutritious meals, life skills classes, referrals to employment opportunities and peer support groups.

Mental Health Services Through the Salvation Army Includes:

Intensive Community Support (Salvation Army)

Eligibility: Must be 19 years or older and diagnosed with a serious and persistent mental illness (SPMI).

About: This program offers assistance for six to 12 months to people age 19 and older who have severe and persistent mental illness and need daily supportive services. Treatment focuses on successfully developing skills in order to maintain adequate housing, increased mental health stability and, ultimately, independent living.

Length of Stay: Provides assistance for 6 months to 1 year. Participants have access to staff assistance 24

hours a day.

Mental Health Respite (Salvation Army)

Eligibility: Individuals with an immediate psychiatric crisis

About: Mental Health Respite offers individuals with an immediate psychiatric crisis residential care for up to 28 days, providing the support, structure, and assistance accessing services needed for stabilization.

A Heartland Family Services Program

The Pottawattamie County Homeless Link (PCHL) Case Management provides short-term support services (one to three months) and financial assistance to low-income Pottawattamie County residents at imminent risk of losing their housing (within 14 days). Eligibility: Individuals must be literally homeless, have a disability, and live in Pottawattamie County in Iowa or Douglas and Sarpy counties in Nebraska. Individuals are chronically homeless — either they have been homeless continuously for a year or more or have had at least four episodes of homelessness in the past three years.

Reference: Participants eligible for permanent supportive housing will be referred to us by Metro Area Continuum of Care for the Homeless (MACCH) to The Salvation Army. These individuals will be referred to MACCH by local shelters and outreach workers. Please contact shelter staff or outreach workers about eligibility for permanent supportive housing.

Durhamm Booth Manor

Through the Salvation Army

Overview: Often individuals and families struggling with homelessness simply need a short-term solution to help them get back on their feet again. Heritage Place at Renaissance Village offers six-month housing options for men, women, couples and families. Participants are provided with one of 33 furnished apartments, which include studio, two-bedroom and three-bedroom units. The program also offers employment assistance, work/life classes, intensive case management, mental health counseling, substance abuse assessments and other support.

Eligibility/ Requirements: Adults aged 62 and older with very low incomes.
