Requirements for the MS Degree
The CS department offers three options for completing the MS degree: the Coursework option, the Thesis option, and the Project option. Also, students may choose an area of concentration.
Core Courses (15 Hours)
The five courses listed below provide overall breadth in the areas of languages, algorithms, architecture, operating systems, and software engineering. Refer to the UNO graduate college's quality of work standards for additional grade requirements.
Students selecting the Thesis or Project option may take only three core courses. Students selecting the coursework option with no area of concentration must take all five core courses (note that some core courses are needed as prerequisites for certain areas of concentration).
|CSCI 8000||Advanced Concepts in Programming Languages||3|
|CSCI 8080/MATH 8080||Design and Analysis of Algorithms||3|
|CSCI 8150||Advanced Computer Architecture||3|
|CSCI 8530||Advanced Operating Systems||3|
|CSCI 8700||Software Specification and Design||3|
To complete the Thesis or Project option, a student must complete any five additional graduate-level computer science courses. The coursework option requires either five or three elective courses depending on whether any of the computer science concentrations is pursued.
NOTE: At most two 6-ending graduate courses will be counted toward the graduation requirement.
Students must have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 (B), with at most one grade below B, but not lower than C+, for all CS graduate classes in order to register for CSCI 8950 Graduate Internship in Computer Science.
A minimum grade point average of 3.0 (B), with at most one grade below B, but not lower than C+, is required for all CS graduate classes.
|Thesis Option||CSCI 8990||Thesis||1-6 credit hours|
|Project Option||CSCI 8960||Thesis Equivalent Project in Computer Science||1-6 credit hours|
|Coursework Option||CSCI 8910||Master of Science Capstone||3 credit hours|
The Capstone course should be taken only after students have completed at least 75% of course requirements for the major. Core classes must be completed. Those who have not made sufficient progress toward degree completion are prohibited from enrolling. Students must have an overall GPA of at least 3.0 to register for the Capstone course.
