  5. Eligibility Guidelines

Teacher Scholars must be first-time freshmen and enrolled in a UNO College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences teacher preparation program:

  • Elementary Education
  • Secondary Education
  • Special Education
  • Early Childhood Inclusive
  • Music Education with PK-12 certification

During the selection process, the committee looks for incoming freshmen who have a record of academic excellence, have a passion for teaching, are committed to community engagement, and embody strong leadership characteristics.

We encourage all students interested in teaching careers to apply to our UNO Teacher Scholars Academy (TSA) program. A holistic approach to selection (including grades, student interview responses, and student resumes) will be used to determine invitations to Interview Day, happening March 28, 2025.

Acceptance to the UNO TSA scholarship program requires a commitment to work in Nebraska as a teacher upon exiting the TSA program, at a minimum, equal to the number of years in the TSA scholarship program.

The application opens October 1, 2024.

On your application

Scholars' resumes must show a commitment to the community and school through volunteer service and extracurricular activities.

Scholars will respond to the following questions in a short answer section:

  • What are your expectations for being part of a cohort program?
  • What do you value about leaders? How do you define what an effective leader is? How have you been a leader in the past?
  • What drew you into the education field or becoming a teacher?
  • Video Question (applicants will film themselves and provide a link to the video response): Why do you want to be selected as a TSA Scholar?

During Interview Day

Scholars will interview with UNO leadership. Parents are welcome to attend. Program and scholarship information will be available to parents and to interviewees.
