In cooperation with physicians and other health care personnel, the athletic trainer aids in the prevention, emergency care, treatment, and rehabilitation of injuries and illnesses in physically-active patients. The mission of the Athletic Training Program at the University of Nebraska Omaha is to prepare students for successful careers or advanced academic studies in the field of athletic training. Admitted students complete a combination of rigorous coursework and clinical experiences over 6 semesters as preparation for national certification and future employment.

Practical Experience:
The UNO ATP relies upon multiple affiliated sites in the greater Omaha Metropolitan area to provide our athletic training students with a variety of clinical experiences. These sites include UNO, Creighton University, nine area high schools, and an area physical therapy/sports medicine clinic.
Weekly clinical education requirements in this program average 20 hours per week in the athletic training facilities, athletic team practices, and athletic team competitions. All athletic training students complete their clinical education via semester-long clinical rotations.
Requirements:
Students must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 to apply for the program. All students must maintain a cumulative and major GPA of at least 2.5 to stay in good academic standing. Students must obtain grades of “C-” or better in all ATP courses in order to matriculate through the program.
Successful completion of this program provides the eligibility to sit for the Board of Certification Examination. The tables below show the pass rates of students in the undergraduate program who have taken the BOC exam, employment rates and retention rates.

UNO’s Bachelors of Science in Athletic Training (BSAT) is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE). The program has voluntarily withdrawn its accreditation and is no longer accepting students into the Bachelor of Science Program in Athletic Training. All CAATE accredited baccalaureate programs nationwide will no longer be able to admit, enroll, or matriculate students into undergraduate athletic training programs after the start of the fall term in 2022. Based on this deadline, UNO’s BSAT program voluntarily withdrew from CAATE undergraduate accreditation following the 2019-2020 academic year.
