Our Mission

The Emerging Media Lab (EML) at the School of Communication is a dynamic hub for innovation in emerging media technologies, situated at the intersection of journalism, communication, and technology.

As a leading center for creativity and imagination, we foster collaboration and knowledge-sharing across disciplines to shape the future of storytelling and drive cutting-edge research. Building on our commitment to innovation, we are dedicated to advancing the field of news reporting and storytelling through cutting-edge research, education, and collaboration with industry partners.

Our mission is to empower individuals – including students, professionals, scholars, and practitioners – to become proficient in working with and alongside emerging media tools and technologies.

By harnessing the power of these innovative tools, we aim to tell stories and produce research that matters, informs, and engages audiences in meaningful ways. We strive to establish our lab as a hub for interdisciplinary collaboration and knowledge-sharing, driving industry innovation through the development of new products, services, and business models that benefit society.

We are committed to fostering an environment where students gain hands-on experience with cutting-edge technologies, equipping them with the skills necessary to navigate and innovate within an ever-evolving media landscape.

Members of the Emerging Media Lab aspire to cultivate a thriving community of scholars and professionals proficient in working alongside emerging media technologies. Through its initiatives, the lab aims to develop intelligent, adaptive, and responsive systems, processes, and experiences that redefine how technology interacts with human creativity.

By achieving these goals, we aim to make a positive impact on society through the ethical treatment and responsible use of emerging media tools and technologies.

Empowering Innovation: Advanced Tools for Emerging Media Research and Creation

The Emerging Media Lab at the School of Communication is dedicated to equipping students and faculty with cutting-edge tools that foster innovation, research, and creative exploration in the evolving landscape of media technologies. Our support extends across AI, data analysis, and social media tracking, ensuring that users have access to industry-leading platforms.

From conversational AI and generative models to qualitative/quantitative research software, the EML provides a robust ecosystem for experimentation. While we actively maintain access to tools like ChatGPT, SPSS, NodeXL, and Hootsuite, we continue to evaluate and expand our offerings, pursuing funding for advanced AI models, enterprise solutions, and statistical tools.
