Why Minor in Black Studies?

Our Black Studies minor is an interdisciplinary study in the arts, humanities, and social sciences. Your coursework will be a scholarly examination of African American life, history, and culture as it has taken shape within the U.S. and helped to transform the nation.

Our minor complements many minors across campus by adding societal awareness and academic background that embraces diverse thinking. Our minor can also be for you if you find the course content compelling, but cannot commit all of your studies to Black Studies.

A growing number of students interested in medical school or the allied health professions benefit from a minor in Black Studies. These students better understand one of the sub-groups of people they will see in healthcare and understand some of the nuances of the communities they come from.

Black Studies Minor

A Black Studies minor may be obtained by successful completion of fifteen credits of course work, of which at least 9 hours must be composed of upper division (3000 and 4000 level) departmental courses.

Health Care Professions & Black Studies

In addition to an education in the sciences, to succeed in the constantly evolving field of health care, you need an intimate understanding of the societal issues and complex problems that health care professionals face today.

UNO's Black Studies program is based on these issues through coursework, reading, and discussions with a diverse group of thinkers.
