Welcome to LGBTQ/Sexuality Studies

LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer1)/Sexuality Studies is an Interdisciplinary field that examines the identities, experiences, and social positions of people often referred to as sexual minorities.


Minor Requirements

Sexuality is an important distinguishing factor of our lives on par with race, social class, and gender.

Through this minor, you will gain increased knowledge in the following:

  • Sexual identity, orientation, and behaviors, including heterosexualities, homosexualities, gay sexualities, lesbian sexualities, bisexualities, queer sexualities, etc.
  • Gender identities including trans* gender, genderqueer, trans man, trans woman, gender non-conforming, etc.
  • Intersectionality of sexuality with race, class, gender, religion, ability, nationality, and other social characteristics
  • Sexology, or the study of sex and sexual behaviors, and human sexuality broadly
  • Sexual health such as STIs, HIV, and sexual reproduction
  • Theories of identity development, queer theory, and other social theories related to sexuality
  • Diversity of human behavior and experience as it relates to sex and sexuality

1Queer, though historically used in a derogatory fashion, has been reclaimed as a personal identifier for many individuals. Queer can be thought of as a catch-all term for individuals who identify as non-heterosexual and/or non-monogamous. It can also be used in lieu of bisexual to signify attraction to people of multiple genders, acknowledging that women and men are only two of a much longer list of possible gender identities.
