Why AFROTC at Det 470?

Being a part of the AFROTC program is not committing to going into the military—it’s a way for you to see what the U.S. military is like while earning your college degree. The program is structured like a college course that focuses on developing leaders. ROTC courses are considered electives for which you’ll receive academic credit. Enrolling in AFROTC is a simple process—it’s the same as enrolling in your regular college courses.

Since its creation in 1951, UNO's AFROTC program has trained and educated hundreds of men and women who have become both community and national leaders.

Detachment 470 has the benefit of proximity of the UNO campus to Offutt Air Force Base which provides relevant learning opportunities that will uniquely prepare our Air Force ROTC graduates for careers in professional and military-related fields. Plus, our partnership with Offutt Air Force Base allows students to meet and observe airmen in a variety of career fields, earn flight hours at the Aeroclub, and receive scholarships from the local Daedalian chapter.

Being a Cadet at Detachment 470 gives you the opportunity to participate in Professional Development Trainings (PDTs) like going to the United States Air Force Academy for their Freefall Academy or learning to fly a glider through the Soaring Program.

Cadets can also learn to fly as part of the AFROTC You Can Fly program where you can receive a $3,500 scholarship to use at an FAA certified flight school. Through this program you can achieve an average of 15 flight hours, typically up to your first solo flight!

Join Air Force ROTC for a college experience unlike any other.

The largest and oldest source of officers for the Air Force? AFROTC, an elective college course that supports students who wish to become officers in the Air Force after graduation. The organization’s mission is to produce leaders for the Air Force and to build better citizens for America. AFROTC’s Detachment 470, hosted at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO), is one of the oldest detachments in the United States.
