This summer, Sofia participated in UNMC's Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) within the Pathology, Microbiology, and Immunology Department. Under the direction of Dr. Leonardo da Silva Augusto, Sofia studied Toxoplasma gondii, a parasite that infects 1/3 of the world's population. Previously, she was a member of UNMC's Summer Health Professionals Education (SHPEP) Program, and has worked as a part-time pharmacy technician since 2024. At UNO, Sofia is highly involved on campus and has held leadership positions in student government and Blueprints For Pangaea, a student-led non-profit that collects and redistributes medical supply surplus to communities in need across the state and internationally. She also serves as the outreach coordinator and founding member of UNO's Salsa Club. Following graduation, Sofia plans to attend medical school while also earning a Master of Public Health (MPH) to combine clinical medicine with population health initiatives, with primary interests in obstetrics and gynecology, family medicine, and infectious disease.
