STEPS FOR SCOTT SCHOLARS APPLICANTS

1. Apply to UNO & Obtain Your NUID

Complete the UNO Application for Undergraduate Admission, if you have not already done so already.

Be sure to identify a Scott Scholars-approved STEM major. To change your major, email unoadmissions@unomaha.edu.

The Scott Scholars Application requires you to input your NUID for verification purposes.

2. Submit the Scott Scholars Application

Please be sure to review the requirements before completing the application.

To begin, access the online Walter Scott, Jr. Scholarship Application.

If you are logged into your Microsoft account, your browser may store your unfinished application, but it is recommended that you complete the application in one session and save your responses in another document.

Gather and create the following required application materials before starting the form:

  • Resume
  • Unofficial or official high school and college transcripts
  • ACT Scores
  • Digital file of school photo, portrait, or headshot
  • Contact information for one STEM-focused recommender to participate in a customized evaluation (they will not submit letters of recommendation)
  • Link to your 5-7 minute video

Video Essay Instructions

Each applicant is required to submit a YouTube link to a 5–7 minute video as part of their application. This video gives the selection committee an opportunity to get to know you—so be yourself, showcase your personality, and thoughtfully respond to the prompts provided.

Requested Video Format:
Part 1 - Introduce yourself, and tell us why the Scott Scholars program is the best place for you to pursue your degree.
Part 2 - Answer three (3) of the following questions:
  1. What’s something you’ve achieved that really mattered to you? Why was it important?
  2. What’s something new you’ve learned in the past month? How did you learn it?
  3. Talk about a time you set a goal for yourself (not one that was required). What motivated you?
  4. Who has had a big impact on who you are today (besides yourself)? What did they do that made a difference?
  5. What’s the most important lesson you learned in high school? Why does it stand out?
  6. What makes someone a strong leader? How do you show some of those traits in your own life?
Video Notes & Tips:
  • You can film everything in one take or edit your video how you see fit. Feel free to take breaks and stitch it back together with your favorite video editor.
  • You may post your video as "unlisted", meaning only those with a direct link to the video can view it.
  • We recommend getting comfortable with your answers and speaking conversationally. Consider writing an outline and practicing from that. Avoid reading from a verbatim script, if possible.

If you have any questions as you complete the application, please email unoscottscholars@unomaha.edu.

3. Next Steps Following Application

Upon receipt of all application materials, eligible applicants will be invited to next steps like Scott Scholars Applicant Day and an in-person interview with the Scott Scholars Admissions Committee.

Please allow one week for processing following your submission.
