Program Overview

Known for their unwavering work ethic and readiness to do great things just as Walter Scott, Jr. envisioned, it’s important for Scott Scholars to have a robust network of support as well as a safe space to unwind and foster genuine connections with like-minded peers. These are just a few of the many benefits of the living-learning community in Scott Residence Hall.

A signature component of the Scott Scholars community is WHOLE (Wellness: How One Lives Effectively), the Scott Scholars wellness program, designed to equip students with the knowledge, tools, and resources necessary for a healthy, balanced, and fulfilling college experience. WHOLE adopts a holistic approach to well-being by targeting the eight dimensions of wellness and drawing on the expertise of community members to ensure all students feel welcome, safe, and supported.

Program Structure

FIRST-YEAR STUDENTS: WHOLE works intentionally with first-year students, recognizing their unique needs as they transition to college life. The first-year wellness program is comprised of eight monthly modules delivered throughout the academic year. These sessions include interactive presentations and trainings provided by subject matter experts in the community.

SOPHOMORES – SENIORS: Three wellness activities, referred to as “electives,” are offered each month. These choose-your-own-adventure style electives target different domains of wellness and help students bond with fellow Scott Scholars. All Scott Scholars are required to participate in at least one wellness elective each month.

Student Development Outcomes

  • Optimal Well-being: Students deepen their understanding of the eight dimensions of wellness by engaging with subject matter experts. Students participate in diverse activities that target these distinct aspects of wellness throughout the year, resulting in a holistic approach to optimizing their health and well-being.
  • Student Engagement: Students participate regularly in wellness-related programming, thereby boosting engagement in the Scott Scholars living-learning community, bolstering academic success, and improving their overall well-being.
  • Cohort Connection: Students have regular opportunities to connect with their peers outside of an academic setting. Students develop strong social networks that help combat feelings of loneliness and isolation.
  • Long-term Wellness Habits: Students develop long-term wellness habits over the course of their four years in the program that will benefit them long after they graduate.
  • Program Retention: Students feel valued, supported, and healthy thanks to the proactive and inclusive environment in Scott Residence Hall, thereby increasing student retention in the program.
