This site is meant to provide you with additional information on the graduate programs at the Computer Science Department at the University of Nebraska Omaha.
Master's and PhD programs. Information on available programs overseen by the computer science department faculty can be found here.
Admissions. All applications to graduate programs in our department/college are evaluated by an admissions committee, independently from the faculty member(s) the applicants have expressed an interest in working with. Students are admitted based on a global ranking of all applicants, which means in particular that no one can assess beforehand an applicant's chances of being admitted. No individual faculty member can decide, promise or guarantee admission or financial aid. Questions about admissions can be directed to the graduate advisor whose information is posted here. The same site has more information on admission.
Contacting Dr. Fandinno or Dr. Lierler directly. We receive every year a fair number of email messages from prospective students expressing an interest in working with us. Regrettably, we cannot reply to each of them individually. We are, however, happy to respond to inquiries from students who have made an effort to learn about our research — as opposed to messages containing generic expressions of interest. Attempt to show genuine interest in what we work on (for instance, have you worked on similar topics yourself or have you read in some depth at least one of our papers). Note that despite the fact that the lab name contains “natural language processing” in its name, the research on machine learning is not something its work is about.
PhD program. Applying PhD students are strongly encouraged to study faculties work and to identify potential advisors based on a match of mutual interests. At application time you are already expected to identify whether you are interested in particular research areas or, more specifically, in the work of some of our faculty, so that the admissions committee can consult with the interested faculty to better evaluate the application.
Master's program. Many of our MS students are involved in research activities either though engaging in Master Thesis courses work or via graduate assistant duties. Faculty cannot consider your application for graduate assistant position without you being officially admitted into our program.
