Welcome to RET Site @ UNO!

The RET Site project on Wearable Research for In-service STEM Teachers (WRIST) motivates Omaha Public Schools (OPS) students to seek engineering and computer science careers with a sustained support from the long-term collaborative relationships between UNO faculty and participating OPS computing and technology teachers.

WRIST Key Objectives:

  1. Provide cutting edge research opportunities in wearable computing and related areas to OPS grade 8-12 STEM teachers.
  2. Enable the participating teachers to translate their hands-on research experience and knowledge to their classrooms with instructional/ laboratory modules and course materials developed.
  3. Stimulate interactions between UNO faculty and grade 8-12 STEM teachers, and subsequently foster a sustained pipeline of students entering computer science undergraduate programs.

Twelve teachers in grades 8-12 per year from OPS participate in a six-week summer hands-on research experience program. The summer projects focus on emerging wearable technologies, and provide hands-on experimentations and daily interactions with faculty mentors who are actively involved in leading-edge research on wearable computing.

36 teachers from OPS, including the summer cohorts, attend a one-day intensive workshop each spring to disseminate and share the summer research results and related teaching experiences. Accompanied with that, participating teachers form a "Community of Practice" in partnership with UNO faculty and industry mentors.
