Graduate Assistantships at UNO

Graduate assistantships (GAs) are available across the university for qualified graduate students. As a graduate assistant, you are considered a UNO employee and receive a competitive funding package that includes:

• Tuition remission
• Monthly salary
• Subsidized health insurance
• Professional experience in teaching, research, or administrative support

Graduate assistants are expected to:

• Be admitted to a UNO graduate degree program and remain in good academic standing.
• Enroll in a minimum of 6 graduate credit hours each semester.
• Work approximately 20 hours per week.

School of Communication Graduate Assistantships

The School of Communication offers graduate assistantships for qualified MA in Communication students. For complete admission requirements for the MA in Communication, please review the Program Catalog.

Graduate assistantships are awarded on a competitive basis. All applicants who indicate interest in a graduate assistantship as part of their program application will be considered. Candidates selected for further consideration will be invited to interview based on available positions, qualifications, experiences, and application materials.

• Select Graduate Assistantship Interest when completing your graduate program application.
• Follow guidelines for the statement of purpose information and letters of recommendation.

How to Strengthen Your Assistantship Application

To strengthen your application for a School of Communication assistantship, pay particular attention to these two application materials:

Statement of Purpose

• Submit a 500-word Statement of Purpose as part of your application.
• If applying for a graduate assistantship, expand your statement to 1,000 words.
  • In addition to the standard prompts, explain:
    • Why you are interested in a graduate assistantship.
    • The qualifications, skills, and experiences that prepare you for the position.

Letters of Recommendation

• Two letters of recommendation are required as part of your application.
• For assistantship applicants:
  • One letter should come from a faculty member familiar with your academic background.
  • One letter should come from a professional contact.
