kaitlin-sundberg Congratulations to Kaitlin Sundberg on winning the 2020 Elton S. Carter Award for Excellence in a Master’s Thesis! Kaitlin’s M.A. thesis, “‘Feature of the Frontier’?: Indigenous Labor and Performance at Cheyenne Frontier Days, 1897-1960,” is an insightful examination of the history of race, representation, exploitation, and Indigenous identity in the twentieth century Great Plains. As you may know, the ESC award is a university-wide honor that all departments are eligible for, but only one award is given.
Congratulations to Joshua Hoxmeier, the 2016-2017 Shuflata Thesis Fellow for the History Department. He also received GRACA, UCRCA, and Martin Fund Grants to complete his research for his project: "Italian Americans and the Forces of Inclusion and Exclusion in Ethnic Identity Formation at Midcentury."
Jillian Roger (UNO History M.A., 2016) successfully defended her M.A. thesis on gender, race, and masculinity during the 1898 Trans-Mississippi Exposition in Omaha. She is the recipient of the 2016 A.V. Sorenson Prize for research on urban history, and will begin teaching at Marian High School in the fall!

Chad Gibbs (UNO History M.A., 2016) will begin his Ph.D. in History at the University of Wisconsin in the fall of 2016. He received a five-year funding package as the "George L. Mosse Distinguished Graduate Fellow in Modern Jewish History."

Jenny Lee received a 2016-2017 FUSE Grant to fund her Digital Humanities project "Middle Ages Currency Conversion Calculator."

Marcia Bennett (UNO History B.A., 2016) is our model student in Public History and Digital Humanities. She received a FUSE Grant and was a Fellow at the Normandy Academy for her research on the Omaha Homefront during World War II. She has been an intern at The Durham Museum, the UPR Museum, and more recently worked as an exhibit consultant for VGA Group and the YMCA.

Leslie Coffman (UNO History M.A., 2013) was selected to participate in "Transcending Boundaries: The Ottoman Empire, Europe, and the Mediterranean World, 1500-1800" in Washington, D.C., which is a Summer Seminar sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Ashley Dorn (UNO History B.A., 2015) received a funding package to start her Ph.D. studies in U.S. immigration and migrant labor at the University of Iowa in the Fall of 2015! A UNO Honors Student, Dorn also received the Undergraduate Achievement Award from the College of Arts and Sciences, the Bernie Kolasa Scholarship from UNO's AAUP Chapter, and was a Phi Alpha Theta member.

Cassandra Tucker (UNO History B.A., 2016) received funding to begin her M.A. in Digital and Medieval History at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in the Fall of 2016.

Abbie Harlow (UNO History B.A., 2015, magna cum laude) received funding to begin her graduate studies in the American West, Native American, and Environmental History at the University of Oklahoma in the fall of 2015. A UNO Honors Student, Harlow completed a FUSE Grant (Fund for Undergraduate Scholarly Excellence) and was a member of Phi Alpha Theta.

Roland Montgomery (UNO History and Religious Studies B.A., 2015) received a 2015-2016 FUSE grant to conduct oral histories and archival research in the Northeast for his project "Wampum, Colonial Contact, and Preservation." He kept an active blog about his research experiences.

UNO Med/Ren Studies students attended the five-day 50th International Medieval Congress in Kalamazoo, Michigan with Professor Saltamacchia.

Paula Sweeney, Catherine (Suzi) Eberly, and Matthew Lockwood celebrate their graduation from UNO as Medieval and Renaissance Studies Minors. Sweeney continues her historical work at the Durham Museum, Eberly is pursuing a graduate degree in Art History at the University of Iowa, and Lockwood started his M.A. in History at UNO in 2015.

Megan Huerter (UNO History M.A., 2014) received a Graduate Research and Creative Activity Grant (GRACA) to conduct research and complete her Master's Thesis: "Aiding the Refugees: The Work of Voluntary Agencies and the Realization of the Cuban Refugee Program, 1959-1965." Huerter is now a student at Creighton Law School.

Tim Royers (UNO History M.A.) received top honors as the 2016 Nebraska Teacher of the Year! Royers teaches Social Studies at Millard West High School.

Congratulations to Jolene (Giwenner) Sequenzia (UNO History B.A., 2014) for graduating with History and Native American Studies degrees! She also received the 2014 George B. Lake Prize from the Department of History.
Derek Benson (Medieval/Renaissance Studies Minor) is the 2014 George and Virginia Dare Shuflata Outstanding Undergraduate Student. He will being his graduate studies in Medieval France at Western Michigan University.
