  4. Safety in the Job Search

Job scams are a real threat to job seekers. They can appear online, in print advertisements, career websites, Craigslist – or even in your email inbox.

Look out for these red flags before responding to any ads or emails:

  • The company name or key job details are missing
  • The email address or location information does not match
  • You are asked for a credit card or bank account numbers
  • The job or pay sounds too good to be true
  • They offer a job without meeting you
  • The job involves transferring money or requires you to use your bank account for company business

Who to Contact if you're concerned about a job posting

If you ever question the legitimacy of a job posting or offer, contact UNO’s Information Security Help Desk at 402.554.4357 or UNO Career Services at 402.554.3672.

If you have already become a victim of an online false job posting scam, file a complaint with the Internet Crime Complaint Center at ic3.gov and possibly the police.

Contact your bank and/or credit card company to close your accounts or dispute charges as necessary.

UNO Career Services recommends using Handshake for your job and internship search needs to increase the safety of your job search.
