Career readiness is the attainment and demonstration of requisite competencies that broadly prepare college graduates for a successful transition into the workplace.

What It Means to Be Career-Ready

Career readiness is about more than just earning a degree—it’s about developing the essential skills employers seek in new graduates. Employers are looking for candidates who can communicate effectively, think critically, work collaboratively, and adapt to the ever-changing workforce.

What Employers Want

The National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) has identified eight key competencies that help college graduates succeed in their careers. These competencies reflect the skills and qualities most valued across industries and serve as a roadmap for preparing for the workforce.

Why These Competencies Matter

By actively developing these competencies during your time at UNO, you will:

  • Stand out to employers as a well-rounded and career-ready candidate.
  • Gain confidence in your ability to transition from college to a professional career.
  • Build professional relationships through networking, internships, and mentorship.
  • Enhance your problem-solving skills to tackle challenges in any field.

How to Develop Career Readiness

You can strengthen these competencies through:

  • Internships & Experiential Learning – Gain real-world experience in your field.
  • Student Leadership & Campus Involvement – Develop teamwork and communication skills.
  • Career Services & Professional Development – Utilize résumé reviews, mock interviews, and workshops.
  • Networking & Alumni Connections – Engage with professionals who can mentor and guide you.
