Before You Arrive

Attire

  • Students are required to wear the UNO cap and gown.
  • Business attire beneath the gown is recommended.
  • Underneath the arena floor is a layer of ice, so it can be chilly. Please dress accordingly.
  • Bachelor's degree candidates: Wear the tassel over the right front of the cap.
  • Graduate and doctoral degree candidates: Wear the tassel over the left front of the cap.

Directions & Parking

  • Traffic will be heavy. Please add 30 minutes to your commute time and we recommend avoiding West Center Road.
  • Vehicles displaying a valid, state-issued handicapped parking permit may park in Lot 21.

Personal Items

  • Do not bring any personal items into the arena (purses, backpacks, coats, etc.). Please give these items to your family/guests to hold during the ceremony.
  • All bags will be checked at the arena door. 
  • Baxter Arena has implemented a clear bag policy.

  • Graduates: please reach out to the Accessibility Services Center unoaccessibility@unomaha.edu and the UNO Events team unoevents@unomaha.edu to inform us you need an accommodation.

When You Arrive

Entry

  • Enter through the main doors at Baxter Arena.
  • Students should head directly to Holland Ice for check-in.
  • Guests should go directly to the seating area. Elevators and wheelchairs are available. 

Check-in

  • Check in 30 minutes before the ceremony at Holland Ice.
  • Graduates will be directed to check-in tables, which are grouped alphabetically by last name.
  • Graduates will be asked to verify the phonetic spelling (spelled like it sounds) of their name and given their name card. Do not lose this card.
  • Graduate students will receive a respective medals at the check-in tables.

Assistance

  • Please give personal items (purses, jackets, etc.) to your family/guests to hold during the ceremony.
  • Graduates should be wearing their caps, gowns, and tassels.
    • Extra tassels are available at the Maverick Store table in Holland.
  • Students receiving a master's degree should have their hoods on, but assistance will be available.
  • Military and military-affiliated students should visit the table located toward the back of Holland.
  • Graduates will be directed to the arena floor.

During the Ceremony

General Instructions

  • Please shut off cell phones and refrain from use during the ceremony.
  • When directed by ushers, line up, grab your diploma cover, present your name card (given to you at check-in) to the reader, and cross the stage.
  • After your official photo is taken backstage, ushers will direct you back to your seat.
    • Photo proofs will be emailed to graduates after the ceremony.
  • As a courtesy to all graduates and their guests, you are expected to remain for the entire ceremony. 
  • Please ask your guests to meet you outside the arena after the ceremony.

Live Stream

  • The commencement ceremony will be streamed live on UNO's Commencement website. Shortly after commencement weekend, archived video of the ceremony will be available on UNO's YouTube channel.

Ceremony Program

  • A printed program will be on each graduate’s chair and available for guests at the ceremony.
  • A digital program will be available on our website the day of the ceremony.

No 'Regional/Local Footer' has been selected.

If desired, use the 'site: Special Events - Commencement/_includes/footer-local' file to either choose a 'Regional Footer' or use the 'Local Footer' option.
